Trip Informations
Spanning coast to coast across the north of England, Hadrian’s Wall is a spectacle of emperor Hadrian’s reign in the once-Roman province of Britannia. These days, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Wall and nearby ruins provide the trail for a seven-day exploration of pre-British history on two feet. Walking from the western outpost of Carlisle to the eastern reaches of Port Gate near Newcastle upon Tyne, you’ll spend a week following one of the richest examples of Roman history in the United Kingdom. Stop in traditional English villages, discover the well-preserved sections of the Wall and hike through the surrounding countryside on a rewarding, active adventure full of history and rolling landscapes.
Why you’ll love this trip
Gain an insight into a piece of the past often overlooked by English travellers as you walk along UNESCO World Heritage-listed Hadrian’s Wall with a local guide.
Visit cosy towns where you can toast to your journey along the trail with a small group of like-minded adventurers.
Reap the rewards of your hike on a well-designed itinerary that gives you free time to do some exploring, especially in the charming village of Corbridge – hiking every day doesn’t mean you have to be ruined like the remains!
Discover Birdoswald Roman Fort on an optional visit and learn the history of Hadrian's Wall's longest and best-preserved stretch while you look out over the River Irthing Gorge.
Soak up the serenity of the English countryside – while the focus is on Hadrian’s Wall on this trip, your eyes and camera will be occupied every step of the way by the lush landscapes of northern England.
Is this trip right for you?
To enjoy this trip, it’s essential to be moderately fit if you want to participate in all activities. Some days include steep ascents and descents, uneven and often slippery terrain. You must be able to walk an average of 4 km (2.5 mi) per hour, across varied terrain, to meet our planned onward transport. Please bring sturdy walking shoes (waterproof, ankle-height) and comfortable clothes. Walking poles may also be helpful.
Your luggage will be transported between overnight locations, but please bring a daypack to carry your essentials.
The diversity of the seasons in England makes for incredible scenery, but the weather in this region can be cold. It’s best to wear layers at all times of the year, in case conditions change during the day. Please be equally prepared to walk in sunshine as in rain.

Hadrian's Wall Highlights with Dani was a wild ride through history! Nice variety of walks with the middle portion really spectacular. Good views, good brews, good company. Would highly recommend this trip to anyone considering a moderate walking holiday in the UK.

The walks on days two to four are the standout. Not strenuous but long enough with enough ups and downs to feel like a proper challenge. Joe is a great leader, approachable and enthusiastic, and clearly loves the area. Clean, comfortable accommodation in Haltwhistle and Hexham. Highly recommend if you want to walk some beautiful English countryside and come away knowing a bit more about the area's Roman history.

The Hadrian Wall walk was breathtakingly beautiful, challenging at times, & rewarding on accomplishment. The Roman Empire story & museums brought the wall alive as I imagined the action and life’s of those before me.

The Hadrians Wall trip was challenging but very do-able for a 72 year old with a bad knee. The guide we had was excellent and made the trip.

Intrepid provided leaders with a deep understanding of the area's history and culture. In our case, they live in the area that they provide tours for. They showed the importance of respecting local customs, learning their ways, history and geography. They make these small group tours an experience of a lifetime.

This was an exceptional experience! I learned so much about Hadrian’s Wall, the Roman Empire, and the history of the area as well as a local’s perspective on the area now from our amazing tour guide. The walking routes were perfectly planned in terms of distance per day, stopping breaks, and seeing the best highlights of the wall. All of the accommodations and food were excellent as well. Would highly recommend!
