Why you’ll love this trip
Spot iconic African wildlife such as hippos, giraffes, buffalo, lions and more on 4WD safaris through three national parks – South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi, and Mikumi.
Visit a workshop where local women transform snares set by poachers into beautiful jewellery inspired by the African landscape, with proceeds supporting conservation efforts.
Spend two nights camping under the stars on the shores of Lake Malawi and take in sweeping views of clear blue water and golden-white sand. In your free time, maybe explore the surrounding area by bike or simply relax on the beach with a book in hand.
Explore the mountain-ringed plains of Mikumi National Park, known for its baobab trees, predators, and large herds of buffalo, wildebeest, elephants and zebra.
Soak in the white sands and turquois waters of South Beach – a long stretch of pristine beaches in Dar es Salaam. During the day, maybe journey into the city centre and learn about its rich culture and trading history.
Is this trip right for you?
This is an overland trip. That means you’ll be travelling with a group in a purpose-built vehicle, visiting remote communities, setting up your own tent (unless you’re on an Original or Comfort style trip), occasionally roughing it in the bush with no facilities, and getting the best possible views of the ‘big five’. While the trucks don’t have air conditioning, they do have sliding windows which let in the breeze and make it even easier to take spectacular snaps of the local wildlife. The driving days can be long, but it’s as much about the journey as the destination, and half the fun is the camaraderie. For more info on this style of travel, see our Africa overland page: https://www.tuuur.com/au/africa/overland https://www.tuuur.com/au/africa/overland (https://www.tuuur.com/au/africa/overland)
There are many excellent optional activities on this trip. We recommend taking this into consideration when budgeting for your adventure.
As the early bird catches the worm, the early camper sights the animals. There will be many early starts either to make use of the better safari time or to beat the morning traffic on long travel days.
Please note that some passengers on this trip will have been travelling together prior to the start of your trip. To see what you're missing out on check out our Cape Town to Zanzibar trip – search trip code UXOBC on the Tuuur website for more information and how to book.

My husband and I knew we had to complete our journey that we started in 2022 doing Cape Town to Victoria Falls. So here we are going from Victoria Falls to Nairobi with this stop in Stone Town. Love love love the BASIX style of INTREPID travels. Even though I am in my late 60s and my husband and in his early 70s we love tent camping and the experiences you get from not going to resorts or fancy stays. Going into this adventure, we knew there would be long, rough, hot days on the road. Africa is a very large continent and these countries are very vast. We did not mind the long days because looking out the window was like watching an award-winning Nat Geo documentary! It’s all worth it for the destinations each day. And to make our trip even more memorable and incredible was our Intrepid staff. I can’t give enough praise to OG our guide, Dan the cook (such yummy vegetarian food!) and Stephen our incredible driver on some gnarly rough roads! This team truly cared about us and made the days FUN! The itinerary is incredible because it gets you up close and personal to locals, the true Africa. Plus seeing every African animal that you could ever dream of was icing on the cake. Loved our camps, loved the food, loved the people, loved washing dishes and flapping to dry, even loved the cold showers at times. It’s INTREPID BASIX travels and it’s PERFECTO!

The itinerary of Vic Falls to Stone Town by INTREPID and BASIX style is definitely the BEST WAY TO SEE THE TRUE AFRICA! We have travelled in the same style from Cape Town to Vic Falls in 2022 so this was must (and continuing to Nairobi). The crew were the best! OG, Dan & Steve. Each day was amazing. Some very long but to get to these great spots, the journey had to be as it was. Hakuna Matata!

This tour is fast paced, but it enabled us to see a lot more of Africa than if we had done it on our own. We enjoyed the company of fellow-travellers. The crew were excellent - highly organised, great manoeuvring on pot-holed roads, healthy and nutritious food with high level of hygiene, tour leader who was helpful, cheerful and knowledgeable

What an adventure! OG, Dan and Kennedy were amazing and the game drives were superb. Be prepared for long drives and early mornings but it’s all worth it with panoramic landscapes and getting up close with so many animals. The guys worked tirelessly to make this an epic adventure. Highly recommended.

This trip will definitely push you out your comfort zone and is an adventure more so than a leisurely holiday. That being said the things you will see and do are worth every early morning wake up, a highlight was the South Luangwa game drive and Lake Malawi. The crew were excellent and you will never go hungry, our chef Francis was an incredible cook and catered for the vegetarians/vegans incredibly well. Laban was an amazing guide who was very approachable and so knowledge. I recommend this trip but be very prepared to spend alot of time in the bus, for a lot of the trip you leave camp in the dark and get to your new camp in the dark. The crew are great though and make sure there are plenty of “bushy bushy” stops. If you want a real African experience do this trip!

The crew on this trip was totally amazing. Being a vegetarian I thought it would be difficult but Charlie made the best meals ever. Our leader and our driver were exceptional also. I only have one minus, the travel days were much longer than specified in the trip notes. They should have probably added a day or two to the trip. It would have been much better. Everyone needs a little down time.

The crew on the tour went above and beyond to make our time unforgettable! Highly recommend Ontanga, Dan and Dan to anyone! Sadly I was lied to about my booking by “Nate” when I booked the first leg of the tour. Do not trust Nate!
