Why you’ll love this trip
Go on safaris in some pretty iconic spots, including the Ngorongoro Crater, the Serengeti, South Luangwa, and the Lower Zambezi.
Embark on a hike through the Usambara Mountains to the Irente viewpoint, then stop at a farm on the way back for a picnic lunch.
Visit a workshop where local women transform snares set by poachers into beautiful jewellery inspired by the African landscape, with proceeds supporting conservation efforts.
Tour a local coffee farm in Karatu village to see the innovative farming practices from the locals, then tuck into a traditional dinner cooked by a local Tanzanian family in their home.
Chill out on the northern beaches of Zanzibar, lounging on white sand after spending a night in Stone Town exploring the winding alleyways.
Is this trip right for you?
No two journeys in Africa are identical. There will be many early starts either to make use of the better safari time or to beat the morning traffic on long travel days. Be prepared for travel times to be longer or shorter than advised. Weather and road conditions can change things significantly, so embrace the detours, shortcuts, and unforgettable moments along the way.
This is a participatory overland camping trip. That means you’ll be travelling with a group in a purpose-built vehicle, visiting remote communities, setting up your tent, helping out with camp chores, occasionally roughing it in the bush with no facilities, and getting the best possible views of iconic African wildlife. For more info on this style of travel, see our Africa overland page at tuuur.com/africa/overland.
Camping in the Serengeti National Park with no barriers between you and the animals is amazing, but it's important to heed the safety advice of your leader. You'll be briefed on arrival.
The day-to-day itinerary features a selection of optional activities. Please note that this list is not exhaustive and is intended only as a guide. Prices are approximate and may change at the discretion of the local provider. All activities are subject to availability.
Some of your fellow group members may have been travelling together prior to the start of this trip or might be continuing after. If you have more time to explore Africa, you may want to check out our Africa Encompassed Northbound trip.

My husband and I knew we had to complete our journey that we started in 2022 doing Cape Town to Victoria Falls. So here we are going from Victoria Falls to Nairobi with a stop in Stone Town & Zanzibar. Love love love the BASIX style of INTREPID travels. Even though I am in my late 60s and my husband and in his early 70s we love tent camping and the experiences you get from not going to resorts or fancy stays. Going into this adventure, we knew there would be long, rough, hot days on the road. Your details described it perfectly. Africa is a very large continent and these countries are very vast. We did not mind the long days because looking out the window was like watching an award-winning Nat Geo documentary! It’s all worth it for the destinations each day. And to make our trip even more memorable and incredible was our Intrepid staff. I can’t give enough praise to OG our guide (‘Our Google’ as he knows everything about our adventure!), Dan the cook (such yummy vegetarian food!) and Stephen our incredible driver on some gnarly rough roads! This team truly cared about us and made the days FUN! The tears shed telling them goodbye were heartfelt. These three left a permanent mark on our hearts. We have added to our ‘chosen’ family! The itinerary is incredible because it gets you up close and personal to locals, the true Africa. Plus seeing every African animal that you could ever dream of was icing on the cake. Yes the BIG five plus so many more - up close and personal. Loved our camps, loved the food, loved the people, loved washing dishes and flapping to dry, even loved the cold showers at times. The Serengeti is magical. My favorite camp for truly being in the middle of Africa. Even with a breakdown in our Serengeti vehicle (a contracted supplier vehicle for that section) it just added some extra crazy memories! It’s INTREPID BASIX travels and it’s beyond PERFECTO!

After dreaming of travelling to Africa for many years the experience was better then I could've imagined. As an inexperienced solo female traveller Intrepid was the perfect option, I would definately use them again and would recommend them highly. The organisation ensured that everything needed was provided. I look forward to future travelling adventures.

I have had the best experience on this trip. Driver Philip, chef Dan and leader Dan made this trip for me! They gelled so well as a group that it made such a positive impact on the entire group. They are all so friendly and helpful. I learned a lot on this trip and I will definitely come back.

It was an amazing trip all the way from Capetown to Nairobi and The Gorilla Trip. The landscapes, the nature, the culture, the people, but especially the crew.( Victor, the guide, Djohn the Driver and Wilson the chef. All professionals. all teambuilders. And all really nice guys. They made the trip beside the good accomodations complete.

Southern/East Africa is amazing and the game drives on this trip were wonderful to experience the wildlife up close. I had a very memorable trip. The tour leader, cook, and driver did their best to make sure everyone's needs were taken care of and we didn't need to worry. Only downside was the amount of driving time between places (although the scenery at times was excellent) and having to wake up very early some mornings. To explore the places on our tour in depth you need more than 28 days.

Long drives every few days which get exhausting. Some great inclusions on the itinerary, some not so much. The Malawi village walk is a sham; the local guide helped locals pressure the Intrepid group into buying tacky souvenirs for absurd prices. The Rhino trek in Bulawayo is worth the money, although it should have included more Rhino spotting and trekking. I would recommend other trips in Africa over this one.

Future Travellers: please expect the first half of this trip to be mostly travelling in an un-air conditioned vehicle, long days, early starts and lots of amazing food. Paying by card is very hard to come by in almost all countries, and CLEAN USD bills are required for almost all purchases and border visas from Zimbabwe to Malawi. Take out way more USD bills than you think you will spend on activities, visas and gifts/snacks for your trip, and an additional $500 for emergencies through Zimbabwe and Zambia. Also the KAZA Visa - Cannot be used for the Zambian overland border. You need a seperate visa for this. All in all; amazing trip - the crew are spectacular, and your fellow travellers will be like family within 24hrs and they always have amazing stories to share on the long drives. Don't forget to look out the window! It's a great trip, as long as you are prepared, are happy to get down and dirty and can sleep almost anywhere! An amazing way to see this part of the continent.
