Why you’ll love this trip
Explore some of the local underground dwellings of Matmata, before enjoying lunch in a troglodyte restaurant where mythical scenes from Star Wars Episodes I, II, III and VI were filmed.
Wander the largest medina in North Africa in Tunis, navigating the twisting alleyways to discover tiny stores overflowing with goods, ancient mosques and bustling squares.
Marvel at the spectacular Roman amphitheatre of El Jem. This 3rd-century structure rises impressively above the surrounding city, playing host to gladiators, musicians, villagers and many more throughout its life.
Meet local female artisans in their workshops and homes and learn how they’re keeping their crafts and art practices alive. Sample local sweets, share home-cooked meals and join in on local cooking demonstrations.
Trek through the Sahara with local Amazigh guides, then settle in at a desert camp to watch the sunset over the epic sea of dunes.
Is this trip right for you?
This trip has included and optional hiking activities that will be most enjoyable with a good level of fitness and proper footwear. We recommend packing comfortable, closed-toed shoes with good support, suitable for rocky terrain.
Camping in the Sahara is a fantastic experience. The facilities are quite comfortable. It is a fixed camp with fixed tents with proper beds, blankets and very close bathroom and shower facilities. While the desert may be very hot during the day, it will still be cool at night. You do not need to bring a sleeping bag, but warm clothes are highly recommended when travelling outside of the summer months.
Quite a bit of walking is involved when visiting some of the historic and other sites on the trip. Sometimes there is no shade, so remember to bring a hat, sun protection and sturdy, comfortable walking shoes.
This trip includes hikes on rocky terrain. We recommend bringing comfortable shoes with good support.
Itinerary
Uncover palm-fringed oases in the desert, sleep in underground caves and break bread with locals
Discover the living history, vast desert landscape and seaside bliss of Tunisia on this 12-day adventure to a seldom-explored gem. Wander through waterfront medinas where the scent of jasmine floats on the sea breeze, explore World Heritage-listed Roman ruins without the crowds, hike over sand dunes and under craggy mountains and feast on spicy Tunisian cuisine, which blends the staples favoured by the nomadic peoples of North Africa with Italian and Spanish flavours. Trek the Sahara with local Amazigh guides and camp under North African stars, meet local female artisans keeping traditions alive and spend a couple of nights in an underground cave dwelling. From vast stretches of pink-hued salt lakes to turquoise coasts and palm-fringed oases – this trip reveals the diverse sides of a Mediterranean jewel.

I highly recommend booking this trip - it truly exceeded all my expectations. Yassin is an exceptional guide whose deep knowledge of history, architecture, culture, and even etymology made every stop fascinating. He thoughtfully enhanced our itinerary with visits to lesser-known sites, offering us a richer and more authentic experience of Tunisia. Our driver, Fathi, was outstanding - professional, attentive, and always ensuring our safety and comfort throughout the 2,000 km journey from Tunis to Douiret and back. Tunisian cuisine is flavorful and hearty, the people are warm and welcoming, the landscapes are stunning, and the small villages are full of charm and character. Merci beaucoup, Tunisie

This was an excellent trip, made more so by Anas the tour guide, who was very enthusiastic about his country. He was knowledgeable, mature, and did it all with good humour. After visiting Tunisia, I am much more aware of its history, geography and culture, and will read more of it.

This tour is fantastic. I came for the Carthaginian history but was blown away by everything else Tunisia has to offer. Every day there’s something new to discover: Berber and Bedouin culture, medinas and mosques, stunning landscapes from the coast to farms, deserts and oases, beautiful artistry in buildings and everyday items alike, great food, and (saving the best for last) friendly and welcoming locals at every turn. The knowledge and passion of our tour leader, Anas, was infectious. The perfect itinerary and perfectly managed tour. Put Tunisia at the top of your list!

I've been on a lot of group tours and this trip was excellent for me. Learning more about the history of the region, experiencing the current culture in northern and southern Tunisia, good food (and harissa!). Our guide Monta was truly exceptional with his knowledge and level of organization. I would say Tunisia is like Morocco - but better (less touristy).

..when we met our guide, he explained many things including the problem with single use plastic...I was a bit taken aback when I saw him opening the package which contained the lovely sturdy shopping bags which he gave to each member of the group...this plastic is single use plastic which to me seems to go completely against your policy of single use plastic. I mentioned it to the guide, it's a little thing but it might make a difference .

This trip was better than expected. Had a couple wow moments at the places we visited. October weather was pretty ideal. Money goes pretty far, I really didn’t spend much at all. Highly recommend this trip.
