Trip Informations
Discover the living history, vast desert landscape and seaside bliss of Tunisia on this 12-day adventure to a seldom-explored gem. Wander through waterfront medinas where the scent of jasmine floats on the sea breeze, explore World Heritage-listed Roman ruins without the crowds, hike over sand dunes and under craggy mountains and feast on spicy Tunisian cuisine, which blends the staples favoured by the nomadic peoples of North Africa with Italian and Spanish flavours. Trek the Sahara with local Amazigh guides and camp under North African stars, meet local female artisans keeping traditions alive and spend a couple of nights in an underground cave dwelling. From vast stretches of pink-hued salt lakes to turquoise coasts and palm-fringed oases – this trip reveals the diverse sides of a Mediterranean jewel.

You’ll need to be moderately fit to take part in the trek across the Sahara Desert. You'll trek 6 hours in total - 3 hours each way, to and from the campsite. Camels will carry your luggage, and it is possible to take a 4WD transfer if needed.

Camping in the Sahara is a fantastic experience, but the facilities are basic. There are double pop-up tents and shared Western-style bathroom facilities. While the desert may be very hot during the day, it will still be cool at night, and warm clothes and a sleeping bag are highly recommended when travelling outside of the summer months. Despite this, the warm Amazigh hospitality and chance to be out under the stars certainly make up for the camp’s simplicity.

Quite a bit of walking is involved when visiting some of the sites on the trip. Sometimes there is no shade, so remember to bring a hat, sun protection and sturdy, comfortable walking shoes.

I went to Tunisia to visit Carthage and found there was so much more to this fascinating country, strategically positioned on the Mediterranean Sea. Great food, excellent wine and friendly people happy to share their culture with curious travellers. And our Leader/Guide Monta was the BEST - so knowledgable and enthusiastic. He really did make sure we had a rewarding and enjoyable travel experience.

A very worthwhile exploration of Tunisia, including riding camels in the desert and sleeping in cave lodging. Our guide was fantastic!

This trip is for someone looking for an unusual adventure which includes camping in the desert, riding camels, staying in cave dwellings, wandering through the many Medinas, bargaining in the souks, and seeing well preserved Roman ruins. Tunisia has a rich history and a wonderful culture and is not to be missed.

Another fabulous trip traveling with Intrepid. The itinerary was an excellent overview of the diverse landscapes and peoples of the country. Tunisia has a very groovy Mediterranean vibe without all of the crowds. There was a good mix of traveling and opportunities for trekking. The overnight cave accommodations and desert camping was very well set up. Amazing to visit the Date Oases during harvest season! All of the food was very delicious….especially the fresh Harissa
Ahmed was an enthusiastic and excellent tour leader. He had a lot of patience with our group and their challenges. He had many great suggestions for optional activities and was able to pivot quickly when the weather wasn’t good. He was very professional and was able to answer all of our questions and share the long history of Tunisia with us. Don’t hesitate to travel to Tunisia. You will love it!

I arrived knowing very little about Tunisia, and left in love with the culture, food, architecture, landscape and people. An amazingly organised and thought-through itinerary, with an incredible guide Monta who could answer absolutely any question thrown at him, and who went above and beyond to listen and respond to everyone's needs. All activities were well balanced, and as a younger solo female traveller I felt very safe and welcome the whole time. Would highly recommend to anyone unsure!

Book this wonderful excursion to Tunisia immediately! You will discover a rich and diverse country: Roman ruins, spectacular desert and mountain scenery, the mosque and medina of Kairouen, and the Mediterranean vibe of the coast. An unforgettable trip thanks to our excellent guide Monta.

We enjoyed our Tunisian tour. The tour leader, Monta, was exceptional and gave us a deep understanding of the history of Tunisia as well as current day life. We had some “once in a lifetime” experiences such as the cave stay and the desert camp.

This trip was simply extraordinary! Tunisia has such a rich history and culture, and this is very rarely understood abroad. Our guide was absolutely brilliant, helpful, organised and extremely knowledgeable! I loved Tunisia and I was happy to discover that it is much more than a country with nice beaches!
