There have been recent cases where the Chinese Railway Bureau has not permitted foreign groups to travel from Beijing to Lhasa by train without any prior notice or specific reason. Please ensure you have access to your contingency fund of USD 500 in cash should your group be affected and need to fly from Beijing to Lhasa. Please see the ‘Important Notes’ section of the Essential Trip Information for more details.

This trip visits places that are over 3500 m above sea level, and as a result some people can suffer from altitude sickness regardless of age or physical health. We recommend not partaking in any strenuous activity until you have time to gauge your reaction to the high altitude at each location, as some people experience mild symptoms of altitude sickness such as dizziness, shortness of breath and sleeplessness. See the ‘Health’ section of the Essential Trip Information for more details.

Overnight train accommodation on this tour is in 6-berth compartments in the ‘hard-sleeper’ class. Bedding is provided and wash basins and toilets (squat and western) are available in each carriage, but there are no shower facilities.
verified
Though there is a long two-night train journey on this trip, it is through some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. The train to the ‘Roof of the World’ travels at high altitude, including the Tanggula Pass (5072 m) and Fenghuoshan Tunnel (4905 m). Altogether, over 80 per cent of the section between Golmud to Lhasa is at elevations of over 4000 m.

As important cultural and historical sites, there are visits to many monasteries and temples on this itinerary. Some travellers find that they can get 'temple-d out' quickly as there's a lot of information to take in. Be sure to stop and rest when you have the chance and take up opportunities to do more varied activities where possible.
verified
There are some nights in more basic accommodation on this trip (including some nights in simple multishare rooms) and at some of the hotels hot water may not be available. Patience and flexibility will go a long way to ensuring you have a good experience when travelling here.
verified
As this trip spends very little time in Beijing and Kathmandu, we recommend you extend your stay in both cities if you want to experience all they have to offer. If you'd like to spend more time in either city, speak to your booking agent ahead of time to organise additional accommodation (subject to availability).

A trip of a lifetime! Enjoyed every minute. Such a huge contrast of scenery and cultures. The altitude was challenging at times, but definitely worth the discomfort to see the mighty Qomolangma (Mt Everest) up close. Kathmandu was a bit of an assault on the senses after the tranquility of Tibet!

I ve never used the cliche phrase "trip of a lifetime" before but this one definitely is a strong contender. We had a lot of fun, we saw many hard to get to places and enjoyed the company of our guides. Definitely recommend.

I had a wonderful trip visiting China,Tibet and Nepal. I learnt a lot from my visit and found it very healing and humbling in addition to being fascinated by the culture. Beautiful scenery throughout and both my guides were very helpful and informative. You will have an amazing time. Please be aware that if purchasing souvenirs such as statues you must ask for a archaeological proof certificate in addition to a receipt otherwise there may be problems at the airport.

Beijing to Kathmandu overland is an excellent Intrepid trip, made particularly memorable by our leader Pema Tashi. He educated us all so beautifully on his homeland and each day was insightful, informative and memorable. The itinerary covers a lot of important sites in Tibet and the scenery is spectacular. Visiting the Potala Palace in Lhasa as well as Everest base camp and the Rongbuk monastery will stay with me forever. Thank you for everything Pema Tashi!

Do it! The accommodation was fantastic, even the train was totally fine. Breakfast almost everywhere included. The altitude is a big challenge, so be prepared (Oxygen available). If you are lucky to get Pema Tashi as leader, you will have the best time. Pema, You’re a star!
