Trip Informations
Steamy Sumatra is a rugged jungle paradise for all types of adventurers. The world’s sixth largest island is teeming with untamed nature and is home to many endangered species, including the Sumatran tiger, rhinoceros, elephants and the acclaimed orangutan. On this ten-day Sumatran expedition, travel from Medan to Bukit Lawang and explore Gunung Leuser National Park. Head to Berastagi and hike up the steaming active volcano Sibayak, basking in the glory of misty panoramas from the summit. Finish in Samonsir on Lake Toba, where the colourfully dressed Christian Batak people welcome you.
Why you’ll love this trip
Try to spot wild orangutans in Gunung Leuser National Park during not one, but two hikes through the jungle – home to some 300 bird species and the endangered Sumatran tiger. Spend the night in the jungle soaking up the wild ambience and falling asleep to the sounds of nature.
Climb the Sibayak Volcano to enjoy panoramic views at its spectacular summit, then head to local hot springs for some well-earned rest and relaxation after the descent.
Explore Lake Toba and the villages on Samosir Island. Check out Indonesia’s highest waterfall and a take a cultural tour that includes a traditional Batak dance performance
Begin and end your adventure in Sumatra’s largest city – Medan. Explore the mix of Asian cultures, which can be seen in the colourful architecture and within the delicious mix of cuisines.
Let your knowledgeable group leader guide you through the thickets of the jungle, past small cultural villages and to the best places to eat around northern Sumatra.

Is this trip right for you?
Sumatra is less developed than other islands of the Indonesian archipelago. Due to limited tourism infrastructure, expect there to be more bumpy and windy roads, some longer drives and more basic hotels. On the plus side, you’ll feel like you’re off the beaten track!
This trip involves either a partial or full camping experience, giving you access to more remote destinations at close proximity, and the joy of camping in the wilderness. This is a participatory trip – a fancy way of saying you’re not just along for the ride, but you are part of a team! Be prepared to roll up your sleeves and help out with camp activities like food prep and washing up. It’s all about giving your new travel mates and group leader a hand, and everyone knows there’s nothing worse than trying to put up a tent on your own! Keep in mind this is jungle camping with twin share tents and no facilities.
Some of the best scenery on Sumatra is found on hikes. So, while this trip doesn't require a high level of fitness, it’s essential to be at least moderately fit if you want to partake in all activities.
You may also want to check out our Best of Indonesia (TISSC) if you have longer time to explore in the country.

An excellent tour. Lilik, alongside his fabulous assistant Karim, was a brilliant guide and we experienced some magical things, included seeing a baby Orang Utan in the wild.

My Sumatra adventure tour with Intrepid was amazing. The tour started on time and everything was very well organised. The places we visited were very well chosen, the time we spent in each place was wisely determined and we dined mostly in the best food spots. During the trip we introduced to several species of plants and beautiful flowers that I have never seen before. Also, we saw macaques, Thomas and orangutan monkeys and hornbill bird, monitor lizard and flying lizard. We danced the traditional Batak dance and had the opportunity to attend an Indonesian wedding. The part that I enjoyed most is Sibayak volcano mountain. Also I should mention that Indonesian food is very tasty, I enjoyed it. Our tour guide lilik was great and knowledgeable. In short, I highly recommend Intrepid for anyone visiting Sumatra.

Such a fantastic trip to an area of Indonesia I would not have gone on my own. We packed in so much , from seeing the orangutans, to a volcano hike, to the tranquility of Samosir Island. Highly recommended.

This trip truly takes you to the real Indonesia. The itinerary is perfectly spaced out so that each destination is covered adequately along with additional local guides meeting us at each spot. The highlight was definitely the two day trek and overnight camping in the jungle - I cannot overstate just how incredible it is to sleep amongst the sounds of wildlife during that night, bearing in mind this part of the trip is not for the fragile, the rain will hit you at some point, you will be need to be fit, ready for a mosquito rave and a visit to 'leech town', so I'd personally recommend leech socks. However despite this, this trip is definitely for lovers of the natural world who enjoy admiring the flora and fauna, the wildlife and the genuinely curious people eager to learn about the culture, history and local people. You really do get an exclusive glimpse into a part of Indonesia that's a lot less visited where accessibility is more restricted unless with a guide, so I'd definitely recommend a visit sooner than later! Lili the Lead guide made the trip even more memorable with his infinite knowledge of the people, the places and historical events he can recall that sets the stage for each destination. His assistant guide Karim also did a spectacular job at providing many facts and deepening our understanding of the country. This trip was lead so spectacularly and I'd rate it highly up there with top lead trips from similar providers. If you're on the fence for this trip, just do it!

Group travel is such a good, safe, fun and easy way travel. Intrepid definitely under promised and over delivered! The tour leader was amazing, so knowledgeable, fun, and responsive to various needs amongst the group. Having dedicated driver and luggage driver too made it a fun, relaxing time. It was great to have local guides in various places and they all were so friendly, welcoming, and expert leaders. The food provided was amazing too! I was a bit worried about the physical rating of the trek but with a little bit of pre-trip training I managed it fine. It is a lot more challenging hiking in the hot and humid climate, and you need to keep drinking those electrolytes, so not easy, but definitely doable for most and definitely worth it. The accomodation was amazing, very comfortable, had everything you needed including power points to keep everything charged for the whole trip. I especially enjoyed staying at the eco lodge. Seeing the Orangutan and other monkeys playing in their natural habitat was definitely the highlight for me, an incredible experience, but the whole trip was great.

The Sumatra Adventure trip gives a lovely taster of this beautiful island. It is a really nice balance of physical activities (jungle trekking and climbing the volcano) combined with cultural experiences. The highlights were definitely seeing the orangutans, climbing the volcano and visiting Lake Toba. Our trip leader Dewi was exceptional - she was very generous in sharing her knowledge on the places we visited, the local customs and the delicious food. Highly recommended!

This particular trip had been enthusiastically recommended by my nephew before I went. His prediction ("Uncle Mez, you will LOVE this trip") was spot on.
