Why you’ll love this trip
Explore the Serengeti, a wildlife arena like no other, and look for lions, leopards, elephants and giraffes in this iconic park.
Learn to prepare a Swahili dish, crafting and learning about village life in Mto wa Mbu.
Take a mind-blowing safari across the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater in an open-roof 4WD vehicle for a chance to see endangered black rhinoceros.
Embark on a hike through the Usambara Mountains to the Irente viewpoint, then stop at a farm on the way back for a picnic lunch.
Tour a local coffee farm in Karatu village to see the innovative farming practices from the locals, then tuck into a traditional dinner cooked by a local Tanzanian family in their home.
Is this trip right for you?
This is an overland trip. That means you’ll be travelling with a group in a purpose-built vehicle, visiting remote communities, setting up your own tent, and getting as close as possible to the Big Five. For more info on this style of travel, see our Africa overland page: https://www.tuuur.com/au/africa/overland https://www.tuuur.com/au/africa/overland (https://www.tuuur.com/au/africa/overland)
Camping in the Serengeti National Park with no barriers between you and the animals is amazing, but it's important to heed the safety advice of your leader. You will be briefed as a group on arrival.
At Usambara Mountains, you'll hike to the beautiful Irente viewpoint. It's not overly strenuous, but a reasonable level of fitness is required to enjoy the walk.
As the early bird catches the worm, the early camper sights the animals. There will be many early starts either to make use of the better safari time or to beat the morning traffic on long travel days.
This trip can be fit together with another adventure to make a larger ‘combo’ tour. Some passengers on your tour will have been travelling together prior to the start of your trip on the Zanzibar to Nairobi trip (YXOQC).
Itinerary
Go in search of wildlife from the crater floor to misty mountains
Take an East African road trip and spend nine days searching for wildlife among Tanzania’s incredible scenery, from the remote Usambara Mountains to the vast expanse of the Serengeti. Go on game drives in search of lions, elephants and rhinos, and experience small-town life during village stays, crafting and cooking sessions. This overland adventure is all about being as close to nature and wildlife as possible – camping in the wild, watching animals you’ve only ever seen on TV in the flesh and going without wi-fi most nights.

Going into this adventure, we knew there would be long, rough, hot days on the road. Your details described it perfectly. We did not mind the long days because looking out the window was like watching an award-winning Nat Geo documentary! It’s all worth it for the destinations each day. And to make our trip even more memorable and incredible was our Intrepid staff. I can’t give enough praise to OG our guide (‘Our Google’ as he knows everything about our adventure!), Daniel the cook (such yummy vegetarian food!) and Stephen our incredible driver on some gnarly rough roads! This team truly cared about us and made the days FUN! The tears shed telling them goodbye were heartfelt. These three left a permanent mark on our hearts. We have added to our ‘chosen’ family! The itinerary is incredible because it gets you up close and personal to locals, the true Africa. Plus seeing every African animal that you could ever dream of was icing on the cake. Yes the BIG five plus so many more - up close and personal. Loved our camps, loved the food, loved the people, loved washing dishes and flapping to dry, even loved the cold showers at times. Favorite people experience was in the Usamboro Mountains and the village trek from Lushoto. Then the Serengeti is magical. My favorite camp for truly being in the middle of Africa. Even with a breakdown in our Serengeti vehicle (a contracted supplier vehicle for that section) it just added some extra crazy memories! It’s all part of INTREPID BASIX travel experiences! We have now completed Basix trips from Cape Town to Nairobi. Can’t say enough about these 7 weeks of truly seeing Africa! A footnote - and please publish this do others can see! Only one negative of this Zanzibar to Nairobi section of our Vic Falls to Nairobi itinerary is we absolutely hated Zanzibar North Beaches. After three weeks in the ‘Outback’ from Vic Falls this was literally culture shock. Tourist trap. High pressure salespeople anywhere we walked. The ‘fake’ Maasai men on the beaches were obnoxious as they wouldn’t leave us alone! Overcrowded. If we could do it over, I’d rather stay camping these extra 2 nights in Dar es Salaam or if going to Zanzibar, just stay in Stone Town as we enjoyed that one night stay and the old town. Remove North Beaches! Do not give money to Nungwi. It’s already over developed and the loss of local culture is sickening!

10/10 The cultural experiences were authentic and did not feel exploitative, it was a good balance of driving, hiking, desert, game drives, cultural experiences and animals!! you need to know that this trip includes camping .. so that is early mornings (5am) , assisting with cooking cleaning and packing and setting up your own tent most days and big groups means things need to be scheduled. I wouldn’t suggest a trip like this with more than 15 people as for me it would impact the enjoyment and space on the bus. The crew were awesome, approachable and professional. they go out of their way to make your trip the best it can be, but keep in mind they too have limited resources so be kind and don’t expect to be spoon fed :) It was AMAZING and you won’t get an experience like this without camping

Intrepid prepared a great series of stops that allowed us to get the most exposure in a short amount of time, all without feeling rushed. The Serengeti was a highlight but there were so many great experiences along the way.

Overland trip from Capetown to Nairobi was a trip of a life time. Far exceeding my expectations. The variety of landscapes - from sparse desert to red sand dunes to mountain villages was impressive. The comfort of the truck and the passion displayed by all guides ensuring our safety and wellbeing was paramount. Don't delay if you are thinking of doing this - you will not regret it.
