Trip Informations
Traverse southern China from the neon lit Hong Kong to the top skyline of Shanghai. Explore the cyber punk city of Chongqing, sweat a little over its signature hotpot, ride the world's tallest outdoor elevator to see the Avatar mountains in Zhangjiajie National Park and dive into the mystic Nvshu scripts in Changsha. This is a trip that showcases a different side of China that mixes modern landscapes with traditional culture.
Why you’ll love this trip
Explore Chongqing’s cyberpunk cityscape, rebuilt from WWII ruins. Your leader will show you through winding alleys, where solo travellers often get lost. Marvel at its incredible urbanscape and enjoy a hotpot meal inside a former air-raid shelter.
Ride the world's fastest outdoor Bailong elevator to the Avatar like Zhangjiajie landscape. Hike in the national park and take in the amazing scenery.
Learn about Nvshu (translated to ‘women’s script) – a secret language created for the freedom of communication between women in ancient China. Meet an expert and learn about Nvshu’s history and cultural impact, then create your own message.
Discover Shanghai’s architectural transformations as you explore from the Bund to the historic French Concession, witnessing the city’s evolution from the ‘Paris of the East’ to one of Asia’s most iconic skylines.
Travel over 3000 km from Hong Kong to Shanghai on China’s high-speed rail. Witness incredible infrastructure and see how China has evolved over the last 40 years.
Is this trip right for you?
There are a couple of long travel days on bullet trains. You'll need to be able to handle your own luggage through these busy train stations.
China’s world-class sites and experiences draw large numbers of local and international travellers. We recommend a little patience and comfortable shoes as you may need to wait before entering the more popular locations on your itinerary.
This trip doesn't have a lot of time in Hong Kong. We highly recommend spend extra time in Hong Kong prior to the trip to explore this great city. Please talk with your booking agent if you are interested in booking extra accommodation.

This is a fabulous, well-rounded itinerary that covers a LOT of ground in a short time. It is very active, so expect a lot of walking every day. Hotels were better than expected. Everything is super cheap here, so you won't spend much on anything that isn't included. It gets crowded in Zhangjiajie, so avoid booking during Chinese holidays. Intrepid puts together great trips, and I highly recommend this one!

Great trip! Highlights were Chongquing (best noodles next to hotel) and Zhangjaijie and the 999 steps. Memories I will treasure for life. Avoid the market walk at Changsha it’s a wet market not good for Vegetarians. Book the trip, China is an amazing country to visit (it’s my 2nd time).

Was a great highlight of less visited Chinese cities. Zhangjiajie was a highlight to see all the sandstone pillars. But just be aware that there is a high chance that fog may ruin some of the great views. Alan was a great leader and had many stories on the history of China and how it came to be the country it is today.

A compact tour which covered a fair amount in a short space of time. Great transport and hotels. Guide was approachable however could have been more proactive and organised.

Enjoyed this busy trip that gives a taste of cities in southern China; overall good value and good fun, covering some key sights. However, it's a new trip & could benefit from fine-tuning the itinerary (e.g. starting the opposite way round in Shanghai, to avoid a long train journey on day 2, & preferably flying between Chongqing & HK. You need extra days in HK. Beware that Zhangjiajie is extremely busy; we visited the Avatar Mountains on a sunny Saturday, and the queues were torture (8 hours in the park, only about 1 actually viewing the landscape); Bailong Elevator is overrated. Hope Intrepid will review this part of the trip and maybe reorder the days. Hotels were all good, though the location of some was less good than others (Shanghai was down a back street adjacent to a demolition site that I wouldn't have been comfortable returning to alone at night as a solo woman). Transport was all good, though you need to be fit to manage your luggage through the huge train stations. I felt that local insight & offbeat sights were a bit lacking on this trip; guides tended to focus on stats (city/population size), rather than narrative descriptions of life in each city & its social & historical context.

Nice and informative short trip of Southern China! The group of twelve consisted of different age groups from 15 to 77 all got along. The scenery at Zhangjiajie was breathtaking except it was raining when we were there. Local foods were good and reasonable.

Trip doesn’t live up to expectations unfortunately. New trip and itinerary looked good but delivery was fair at best. Tour leader was lost at times with itinerary. Zhangjiajie felt more like a cruise excursions, being pushed along from site to site with 15 minutes to enjoy the views while fighting with hundreds to get the picture! Needs strong leader who can offer suggestions on free time. Disappointing trip unfortunately

A waste of opportunities: with a slightly different itinerary there would have been not so much time spent travelling, often to places you wonder why were they chosen; poorly chosen activities and sites: Tianmen Mountain and Zhangjiajie Forest; OK no temples or historical sites, Museum was a joke, uninteresting itinerary; hardly any vegetarian food
