Trip Informations
Unplug from your everyday routine and head to the beaches and backwaters of southern India on this 16-day adventure. Explore the lush landscapes, intriguing cultures, bustling bazaars and incredible cuisine of this region, all with the guidance of a local leader. Jump on and off local transport and travel through coconut groves and fishing villages, discovering the heart of the subcontinent. See ancient ruins and stunning temples, feast on spicy curries and Zen out in the relaxed towns of Varkala and Hampi. Opt to explore the Kerala Backwaters in a pole boat, plus stay with a local family in an island village. End your journey on the beautiful beaches of Goa.
Why you’ll love this trip
Discover the golden beaches and age-old fishing villages that make Goa one of India’s most popular retreats – and a perfect place to consider extending your southern India adventure.
Make the most of free time in Varkala, Madurai and Mysore with all the best recommendations from your local leader. Wile the afternoons away on the beach, visit nearby temples or uncover local culture at the museums.
Glide through the backwaters of Kerala on an optional pole boat ride, going ashore for a village stay – a scenic break from hotels and a perfect way to get close to local customs and culture.
Cross into Kochi – a major port city in India’s southwest. Explore the seaside Fort Kochi area and consider watching a traditional Kathakali dance performance in your free time.
Opt to visit a spice plantation in Periyar and breathe in the scents of cardamom, pepper, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla. Then, maybe go on an optional guided nature walk at Periyar National Park where you can look out for tiger tracks.
Is this trip right for you?
This is a trip made for travellers who value their independence but also want the benefit of a local leader and a group of like-minded travellers. The itinerary has a mix of included activities and free time when your leader will offer suggestions. Please budget spending money for optional activities you want to take part in and transport to and from them.
We are covering a lot of distance in a vast country, so this trip involves some early starts and long train rides. Sleeper trains are a quintessential Indian travel experience. They’re a great way to travel long distances and maximise your time in each place. You’ll be travelling alongside locals, as well as Tuuur travellers, in a compartment of mixed genders. You’ll find more details about the experience in the Accommodation section of the Essential Trip Information, or you can read more about it here: https://www.tuuur.com/adventures/india-trains-guide/ . https://www.tuuur.com/adventures/india-trains-guide/ (https://www.tuuur.com/adventures/india-trains-guide/)
This trip runs year-round, so it’s important to be aware of just how hot it can get in India in the summer months and choose the season that best suits you.
We've sourced our accommodation carefully and picked the best possible hotels in line with the Tuuur style of travel. Service and accommodation in India may be different from Western standards.

I came with little knowledge about India, both my tour leaders in 37 days showed me what an amazing place India truly is. To prove it, check out; Terry explores on Youtube, and judge how good Intrepid travel is.

Incredible itinerary of South India not to be missed! Your tour leader makes you feel well looked after and accommodated for. Inclusions are wonderful and the entire trip is so varied. I wish I could do it all over again.

This tour of southern India took us to parts of India we had never seen before and allowed us to experience interactions with a wide variety of different communities in India. A great experience that will live with us forever.

A wonderful trip with a fantastic combination of organised activities and free time. It is a trip that makes you feel like a traveller not a tourist and you really feel like you 'hop into' the country rather than look at it. Sree was the best leader ... he was kind, patient, knowledgable and fun. He ensured that we all had a fantastic experience individually and also as a group. South India is a colourful, soul filling, mind expanding, heart nurturing experience and I highly recommend it. My 4th trip with Intrepid, thank you ... love your work!

Great trip! We had an amazing guide who really made the trip. You get pretty good value for your money for this trip considering the hotels we stayed in and all the logistics being handled by Intrepid and the tour guide.

An unforgettable trip to India - vibrant, eye-opening, and well organised. What made it truly exceptional was Sebin, the best leader you could ask for. His passion and positivity elevated every moment and made the entire experience genuinely special.
