Why you’ll love this trip
Golden beaches and age-old fishing villages make Goa one of India’s most popular retreats – and a perfect place to consider extending your southern India adventure.
Soak up free time in Varkala, Madurai and Mysore, using your afternoons to relax on the beach, visit nearby temples or explore the local culture at the museums.
Glide through the backwaters of Kerala on a pole boat, going ashore for a village stay– a beautiful break from hotels and a perfect way to get close to local customs and culture.
Cross into Kochi – a major port city in India’s southwest. Explore the seaside Fort Kochi area and consider watching a traditional Kathakali dance performance in your free time.
Visit a spice plantation in Periyar and be filled with the scent of cardamom, pepper, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla. Then, maybe take on the optional guided nature walk at Periyar National Park where you can look out for tiger tracks.
Is this trip right for you?
This is a trip made for travellers who value their independence but also want the benefit of a local leader and a group of like-minded travellers. The itinerary has a mix of included activities and free time when your leader will offer suggestions. Please budget spending money for optional activities you want to take part in.
We are covering a lot of distance in a vast country, so this trip involves some early starts and long train rides. These can at times be a bit gruelling, but offer a quintessential and authentic Indian experience. Sleeper trains are a great way to travel long distances while still getting maximum time in each place. Beds are padded berths with sheets, pillow and blanket provided (although some people prefer to bring their own sleeping sheet). Please note that you may be sharing with locals of all genders. More information can be found in the 'Transport' section of the Essential Trip Information.
This trip runs year-round, so it’s important to be aware of just how hot it can get in India in the summer months and choose the season that best suits you.
We've sourced our accommodation carefully and picked the best possible hotels in line with the Tuuur style of travel. Service and accommodation in India may be different from western standards.
Itinerary
Beaches, backwaters and biryanis aplenty
Unplug from everyday routine and head to the beaches and backwaters of southern India. Explore the lush landscapes, intriguing cultures, bustling bazaars, and incredible cuisine of this region. Jump on and off local transport and go rural through coconut groves and fishing villages, discovering the heart of the subcontinent. See ancient ruins and stunning temples, eat spicy curries, and drink luscious lassis. You'll zen out in the relaxed, unique towns of Varakala and Hampi. Explore the Keralan Backwaters in a pole boat before heading to an island village for an overnight homestay with a local family. Join the bustle of city streets and, at the end of it all, unwind on the beautiful beaches of Goa.

South India Revealed Basix tour with Thilip as our guide was outstanding. South India is so different from the northern areas -- a much more relaxed vibe, almost jungle-like landscapes, gorgeous beaches, and clean, fresh air. Our leader was excellent at making extra outings available for those who wanted to fill their free time visiting local sites. Organization for meals, accommodation and travel was wonderful. Everything was a new adventure! Absolutely loved this holiday.

I booked this 37 day trip which is a combination of North India Revealed followed by South India Revealed. I am so glad I chose the trip and got to see two parts of a hugely diverse country that has been amazing. Both trips were well organised with thoughtful interesting excursions, optional trips. I got to see two very different sides of India in one fascinating trip. My group leaders Shubhi in the North and Thilip in the South were exceptional. Top class leader!

I recently completed Intrepid’s South India Revealed and loved every moment of it. The itinerary was vibrant, varied, and full of authentic experiences, from temples and markets to coastal towns and incredible food. But what truly made the tour unforgettable was our guide, Thilip. Thilip was absolutely awesome. He consistently went out of his way to make sure everyone was comfortable, informed, and having a great time. I felt safe and well looked after throughout the entire trip, and his warm personality made the group feel like a family. He always had fantastic ideas for optional activities and local experiences that added so much depth to the journey. If you’re considering the South India Expedition, I can’t recommend it enough. It’s a beautiful trip made exceptional by a truly dedicated guide.

South India is a wonderful place to visit. It's rich in history, temples, and delicious food. This tour gives you a very good overview of this region. The train part on the last leg of the trip could be challenging as we are sharing it with local people. But that's also what makes the experience real. The choice of hotel/guesthouse is good. Just remember that most of the cultural experiences are optional at a very reasonable price.

South India Revealed was a great journey for me as I felt supported in a small group and with company it made things alot safer especially when arriving at new places. Going out for meals and handling excursions as planning was done The transport arrived. The optional activities were outlined, always time to get to ATMs. Help and support from our team leader Ajay was always given . He was professional. Highly organised and explained things well. We had a great journey to many different places temples and areas of interest which are highlights for me . Bri v part of a group meant there was always help on hand. Friendships could develop with the whole group and this provided support for each one of us. It was lots of fun. Loved the shared meals and activities. South India is amazing. As a seasoned traveller to India, this has been the safest and most enjoyable journey I had been on in the last 30 years.

If you are lucky enough to have Sreejith Mohan for your tour leader you are in for a treat. He is organised, kind, thoughtful and made my recent trip to South India a holiday to treasure. Everything ran smoothly and nothing was too much trouble for him. His local knowledge is amazing and he is justifiably proud of his country.
