Trip Informations
Why you’ll love this trip
Golden beaches and age-old fishing villages make Goa one of India’s most popular retreats – and a perfect place to consider extending your southern India adventure.
Soak up free time in Varkala, Madurai and Mysore, using your afternoons to relax on the beach, visit nearby temples or explore the local culture at the museums.
Glide through the backwaters of Kerala on a pole boat, going ashore for a village stay– a beautiful break from hotels and a perfect way to get close to local customs and culture.
Cross into Kochi – a major port city in India’s southwest. Explore the seaside Fort Kochi area and consider watching a traditional Kathakali dance performance in your free time.
Visit a spice plantation in Periyar and be filled with the scent of cardamom, pepper, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla. Then, maybe take on the optional guided nature walk at Periyar National Park where you can look out for tiger tracks.
Is this trip right for you?
This is a trip made for travellers who value their independence but also want the benefit of a local leader and a group of like-minded travellers. The itinerary has a mix of included activities and free time when your leader will offer suggestions. Please budget spending money for optional activities you want to take part in.
We are covering a lot of distance in a vast country, so this trip involves some early starts and long train rides. These can at times be a bit gruelling, but offer a quintessential and authentic Indian experience. Sleeper trains are a great way to travel long distances while still getting maximum time in each place. Beds are padded berths with sheets, pillow and blanket provided (although some people prefer to bring their own sleeping sheet). Please note that you may be sharing with locals of all genders. More information can be found in the 'Transport' section of the Essential Trip Information.
This trip runs year-round, so it’s important to be aware of just how hot it can get in India in the summer months and choose the season that best suits you.
We've sourced our accommodation carefully and picked the best possible hotels in line with the Tuuur style of travel. Service and accommodation in India may be different from western standards.
Itinerary
Beaches, backwaters and biryanis aplenty
Unplug from everyday routine and head to the beaches and backwaters of southern India. Explore the lush landscapes, intriguing cultures, bustling bazaars, and incredible cuisine of this region. Jump on and off local transport and go rural through coconut groves and fishing villages, discovering the heart of the subcontinent. See ancient ruins and stunning temples, eat spicy curries, and drink luscious lassis. You'll zen out in the relaxed, unique towns of Varakala and Hampi. Explore the Keralan Backwaters in a pole boat before heading to an island village for an overnight homestay with a local family. Join the bustle of city streets and, at the end of it all, unwind on the beautiful beaches of Goa.

South India Revealed was my third trip in India with Intrepid. I really enjoyed the tour. Videography is a passion of mine and all of the group and tour leader, Sebin, let me film to my heart's content. The places we visited were great. There was an ideal balance between organised time and free time.

This was a fantastic way to see the highlights of South India. I didn’t know what to expect as the sights in the north are more famous, but everything blew me away. Sebi, our tour leader, was an absolute legend. The trip accommodations and inclusions exceeded my expectations for a basic package. I loved every minute of it. I won’t be able to shut up about it when I get home.

This trip has two halves - the relaxing first half by the coast and the intense second half with the cities of Madurai, Mysore and the historical sites around Hampi before finishing again by the coast in Goa. On the way you will see a lot, eat some wonderful food and find yourself completely immersed in the experience of Southern India. Our guide, Sree, was fantastic, and was always available to recommend things to do or places to eat (and even things to eat). He clearly loves his country and is happy to introduce other people to it and make them love it as well.

We visited some lovely and interesting places on the South India trip which covered long distances and was very good value. The tour was well organised and our tour guide Sebi was inclusive, energetic, helpful, kind and thoughtful. We would recommend this tour.

The tour was just excellent. Travelled with my two daughters who became enchanted by India. Good mix of fellow travellers and a great tour leader in Sebi. Totally recommend it.

South India Revealed Basix tour with Thilip as our guide was outstanding. South India is so different from the northern areas -- a much more relaxed vibe, almost jungle-like landscapes, gorgeous beaches, and clean, fresh air. Our leader was excellent at making extra outings available for those who wanted to fill their free time visiting local sites. Organization for meals, accommodation and travel was wonderful. Everything was a new adventure! Absolutely loved this holiday.

I booked this 37 day trip which is a combination of North India Revealed followed by South India Revealed. I am so glad I chose the trip and got to see two parts of a hugely diverse country that has been amazing. Both trips were well organised with thoughtful interesting excursions, optional trips. I got to see two very different sides of India in one fascinating trip. My group leaders Shubhi in the North and Thilip in the South were exceptional. Top class leader!
