Trip Informations
Encounter the many charms of Scotland’s northern reaches on this seven-day adventure. Take in vistas of dramatic coastlines and towering sea cliffs, see wildlife like seals and otters and settle into cosy pubs in the town of Kirkwall. Meet Shetland ponies, visit the prehistoric Jarlshof settlement and hike along the rugged landscapes of Eshaness. Take a ferry over to the Orkney Islands where an impressive collection of Neolithic monuments, the historically rich island of Hoy and an evening of traditional Orkney folklore and music await. And, you’ll do it all with a leader by your side to point you in all the right directions.
Why you’ll love this trip
Explore two remarkable Scottish archipelagos – Shetland, with its staggering sea cliffs and historic sites dating back to the Iron Age, and Orkney, full of Neolithic ruins and British naval history.
Visit Shetland for its vast landscapes, rich wildlife and exciting blend of Norse heritage. Settle in Brae, the vibrant heart of Shetland's North Mainland, offering stunning coastal scenery, rich island heritage, and easy access to some of the UK's most spectacular natural landscapes.
Uncover the ancient ruins of Jarlshof, which date back to the Iron Age. Then, head to Bigton Wick to walk along St Ninian’s Beach and take in views of sea stacks, towering cliffs and the rugged coastline.
Spend a morning exploring the island of Hoy and the renowned Scapa Flow Museum – home to rare artefacts and exhibits that tell the story of the anchorage that was once the heart of the British naval fleet during both World Wars.
Discover the Shetland and Orkney Islands’ shared Norse culture and learn what makes each archipelago unique. Enjoy traditional Orkney folklore storytelling by the fire and maybe even meet some Shetland ponies.
Is this trip right for you?
You’ll travel between the Shetland and Orkney Islands by ferry. Some people may experience seasickness in occasional rough seas. Over-the-counter seasickness medication is usually an easy fix.
Scotland’s weather can be varied, often described as four seasons in one day! This is particularly apparent at the start and end of the season. Please bring appropriate clothing for adverse weather conditions, including base layers, hat, gloves, scarf, waterproof clothes and anything else that will keep you warm and dry.
As accommodation on this trip is twin-share, single travellers will share a room with another traveller of the same gender. This trip is a great opportunity to get to know other like-minded people, so embrace it while you can. Hotels in Europe can seem small by Australian or American standards, and often don't have double beds, but rather two single beds that can be pushed together or apart.
