Trip Informations
Discover the many charms of the Shetland Islands on a small group adventure featuring dramatic coastlines, towering sea cliffs, wildlife and history. Stay in Lerwick – home to the Shetland Museum & Archives, a collection of exhibits that paint a colourful picture of medieval and modern times on the island. Scenic drives in a private minibus will take you to the rugged landscapes of Eshaness and Muckle Flugga – the most northerly inhabited point in the United Kingdom – where you can spot local wildlife like puffins, seals and otters. End your days in atmospheric pubs with friendly locals and experience the magic of the Northern Scottish Isles for yourself.
Why you’ll love this trip
Visit Shetland for stunning landscapes, rich wildlife, and a unique blend of Norse heritage and vibrant culture. Settle in Lerwick, charming, historic capital, with narrow, winding streets and a picturesque harbor.
Learn of Shetland’s Norse history dating back to the 8th century, with Viking settlers shaping its culture, language, and place names. The heritage is seen in archaeological sites and traditions as well as the Shetland Museum.
Uncover the ancient ruins of Jarlshof, a remarkable archaeological site, before hiking to Sumburgh Head for breathtaking coastal views and seabird colonies.
Keep a lookout for sea and native birdlife on a private daytrip to Hermaness Nature Reserve and Muckle Flugga Lighthouse – the most northerly point in the United Kingdom.
Discover Eshaness, where dramatic sea cliffs, crashing waves, and rich history make it a must-visit destination.
Is this trip right for you?
There are three days of (D2,D3 and D4), where hikes of 5-8 km are scheduled along coastal paths. These treks aren’t too demanding, with minimal elevation, and they do follow established paths. However, you will need a good level of fitness and reasonably sturdy footwear (ideally waterproof), to fully enjoy them.
Scotland’s weather can be varied, often described as 4 seasons in one day! This is particularly apparent at the start and end of the season. Please bring appropriate clothing for adverse weather conditions, including base layers, hat, gloves, scarf, waterproof clothes, and anything else that you think may be applicable.

The trip was wonderful and the scenery on the cliff walks was beautiful and surreal. Doug was a very knowledgeable leader regarding the wildlife and the environment and made the trip very enjoyable. You really need to be able to walk up to 10 miles a day (including going to dinner at night) so be prepared for lots of walking and possible rain. Also know that you have to book a taxi ahead of time to pick you up at the airport upon arrival in Shetland.

I thoroughly enjoyed my 6 day trip to Shetland The scenery and the people were amazing The dinners at local restaurants were delicious The walks were so fabulous Unfortunately the accommodation at Glen Orchy House was unacceptable and Intrepid need to find a better place to stay

The tour of the Shetland Islands with "Intrepid" was a joy. I saw SO much archaeology, wildlife ( mostly birds, we kept missing the orcas) , experienced lots of fresh air, walking, exploring. The accommodation was good, well located .Etc Etc. Good trip, great trip

If you are thinking of visiting Shetland I would have no problem in recommending Intrepid travel. The itinerary was perfect and the guide was excellent. 10 out of 10.

This tour provides an excellent insight into, and experience of, remote island life. Experiences range from ancient stone structures, which in themselves are remarkable to wild coastal walks with extensive birdlife. Plus an informative and knowledgeable guide.

The Shetland trip was unforgettable, largely due to our exceptional guide, Doug. However, unclear trip descriptions and fitness requirements hindered our planning. Providing details about the guesthouse name and check-in times would enhance future adventures. Overall, Doug’s efforts made this a rewarding journey despite the lack of clarity from Intrepid!

Guide is excellent, tour Company not so much. Poorly organized & fitness rating is too low… 4/5 rating is more like it

We had an excellent trip led by a thoughtful and knowledge leader that attracted a group that loved adventuring as much as we do.
