Trip Informations
Get to know a land of natural beauty and rare wildlife on this Borneo adventure through Sabah. With its collection of unique animals, ancient traditions, tribal villages, rescued orangutans and scenic views, Sabah has something for everyone. You’ll experience it all over 11 days in Borneo – climbing Mt Kinabalu at sunrise, watching sea turtles lay their eggs with an expert local ranger by your side and sharing laughs with your local hosts in a remote village. Visit conservation sanctuaries, search for local wildlife at different times of day and night along the Kinabatangan River (including pygmy elephants if you’re lucky) and explore the wilderness of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Kinabalu National Park.
Why you’ll love this trip
Climb Mt Kinabalu – the literal pinnacle of all treks in South East Asia – with local guides whose families have trekked the mountain for generations. Watch the sunrise at the peak after a morning hike and spot diverse flora and fauna along the way.
Spend time getting to know the unique wildlife of Borneo at conservation sanctuaries for orangutans and sun bears.
Join a local ranger to witness the life cycle of sea turtles, who come ashore on Turtle Island to lay their eggs on the beach. At night, you’ll watch the hatchlings make a dash down the beach on their way to their new life.
Cruise down the Kinabatangan River and search for wildlife in this rich and unique jungle ecosystem – if you’re lucky, you may see wild pygmy elephants!
Spend two nights in a Dusun village in the shadow of Mt Kinabalu – the highest mountain between the Himalayas and Papua New Guinea. Spend time with your friendly hosts, explore a local vegetable farm and watch a cultural performance.

Our guide in Borneo, Chichi was OUTSTANDING!! She clearly and genuinely cared about our wellbeing and enjoyment throughout our tour and in many ways, the great success of our trip can be attributed to her warm and enthusiastic leadership. My daughter and I very much enjoyed Borneo - our group was lovely, climbing Mount Kinabalu was an experience we'll treasure, the jungle and wildlife were breathtaking and Chichi was a GEM xx

Our guide Chi Chi was so knowledgeable and passionate about Sabah. The wildlife experiences at Kinabatangan River, with dawn and dusk river cruises had a large array of Borneo wildlife. This was the highlight of the trip for me. I didn't climb Mt Kinabalu, but there was ample time to explore the geopark trails and Botanic garden instead. A great trip!

Our trip leader Aswad is professional, resourceful and helpful. A great leader! The climbing of Mountain Kinabalu in 2 days was physically challenging and demanding. I believe that if the climbing extends to 3 days would dramatically help/improve the experience.

The staffing (especially our guide Chichi), hosts and itinerary were up to Intrepid’s usual exceptional standard. From the challenge of Mt. Kinabalu to the relaxed river safaris and the huge range of options between. We would not hesitate to book with Intrepid again.

A very well balanced and stuctured trip with a good mix of strenuous and relaxed activiities. The mountain is definitely tough but totally doable and worthwhile. Be aware that there is a bit of abseiling on and off which might put off those with a fear of heights and be difficult with a low upper body strength.

This trip was amazing, so much fit into 10 days. You will be on the go most days, so not for someone who wants to relax too much. Do try to train a bit for the mountain climb, the descent is brutal on the legs, I wish I'd trained a bit more. Having said that, it was exhilarating to reach the summit and I absolutely loved the jungle portion of the trip. Saw a lot of wildlife. I wish id taken binoculars and/or a zoom attachment for my phone, so do consider this. I definitely recommend this trip 👌

The Sabah Adventure is absolutely worth doing! It takes you to a diverse set of places, activities, and landscapes in this astonishing biodiversity hotspot. Just be prepared that ascending Mount Kinabalu is no easy task, and you really should prepare yourself physically to do it. Don't think twice about bring trekking poles and, if in doubt, definitely hire a porter to carry your bag. It will make a difference, especially in day 2, when you need to hike down 6 km, after hiking up and down over 5 km, to reach the summit.

As a 63 year old I found the Mt Kinabalu climb near the limit of my ability. A wonderful sociable group and an outstanding leader in Aswad made the trip a great success and adventure. Memorable.

Great trip covering Borneo. The mountain climb is hard. Don’t underestimate this. The rest of the trip is great and relaxing as many animals to see in the wild. Thanks Aswad for a wonderful insight to Borneo
