Trip Informations
If you want a short trip packed with historic sites and delicious bites, this eight-day adventure fits the bill. Get to know Italy's 'Eternal City' (Rome), hike up Mt Vesuvius volcano on the Bay of Naples and witness the aftermath of the 79 AD eruption on a guided tour of Pompeii. Then soak up the sunshine in the coastal town of Sorrento, taste limoncello from the source and hike along the beautiful Amalfi Coast. With archaeological sites, gelato making workshops, pizza tastings and a local leader to share their culture, you're all set for a taste of la dolce vita.
Why you’ll love this trip
Discover the well-preserved ruins of Pompeii with a local guide and get a glimpse into what daily Roman life was like before the city’s tragic fate in 79 AD.
Hike up to the crater rim of the still active Mt Vesuvius (1281 m) – known for the eruption that covered Pompeii with ash – where you’ll have prime views over the Bay of Naples.
Spend a couple of days exploring the seaside resort town of Sorrento – famous for its old streets, fresh seafood and lemon groves – and enjoy a tasting of tangy limoncello liqueur.
Fuel your adventures with a pizza tasting in Naples – the alleged birthplace of this beloved carb – and experience the Neapolitan custom of caffe sospeso (the act of paying it forward).
Explore the Amalfi Coast on a half-day hike along the Sentiero Degli Dei (Path of the Gods), then see the cliffside town of Positano from a different angle on a scenic ferry back to Minori.
Is this trip right for you?
Please keep your luggage as small and light as possible. You'll be travelling on public transport where storage space is limited. You'll need to be able to lift your luggage into storage racks, walk across cobblestone streets with it and carry it up and down stairs.
The primary means of transportation on this trip is by train, offering fast travel across long distances without traffic delays, delivering you directly into city centres. Trains are comfortable and equipped with toilets but can be busy.
Summer temperatures in many visited regions can exceed 40c, so protect yourself from the sun and stay hydrated. Keep in mind that July, August and early September constitute high season along the Southern Italian coast, impacting local infrastructure due to increased visitor numbers.
Hotel rooms in Europe may differ from American or Australian standards, often featuring two single beds that can be pushed together instead of a double and shared bathrooms rather than en-suite facilities.
For those with extra time, consider extending your trip to explore more of Italy. Explore further south into the heel of Italy with our ‘Rome to Southern Italy’ trip (trip code ZMSSC) or head down to Sicily with our ‘Rome to Sicily’ trip (trip code ZMSFC).

1. A single supplement is available if you’d prefer not to share a room on this trip. The single supplement is subject to availability. Please speak to your booking agent for further information.
2. Please note that the physical rating for this trip is set at 2. While this is correct for the overall trip, there are some components that are of a higher physical rating. Both the climb to the summit of Mt Vesuvius and the hike on the Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei) require a certain amount of fitness. Please read the day-to-day itinerary carefully or speak to your leader for more details. Activities can be opted out of if you don't want to participate.
3. You don't have a lot of time in Rome at the start of the trip, so if you're keen to explore this spectacular city in depth we recommend you arrive a day or two before the start of the trip, especially if you would like to see the Vatican Museum as it is closed most Sundays. The southern Italy tour destinations in this tour are stunning. The itinerary had not too much travel time, which allowed us more time to explore and enjoy. The tour is really well crafted and allowed us to visit many must-see places. Lisa, our tour guide, was awesome. She genuinely cares and enjoys showing people her beautiful country. She made me and my husband feel like we were taking a vacation with a friend. She was able to handle different personalities and be attentive to everyone’s needs. I recommend this trip one hundred percent.

A hiking trip for non-hikers with a mix of mountain tops and sea side experiences this trip is so much more than an active experience. Local, really and authentic Italian all the way down the coast!

I highly recommend the Rome to Amalfi trip. Trip activities were well laid out and supported by excellent hotel choices in great locations. Tour leader Spartaco was enthusiastic, very knowledgeable and well-organized. He actively participated with the group and overall contributed greatly to the enjoyment of this very memorable trip.

This was a great trip, in large part to how well organized and passionate our tour leader Serena was. She looked for many opportunities to get us the best experience, whether it was helping us be more comfortable at restaurants, getting us the highest quality guides or views for specific excursions, or in general passionately explaining the history and modern and historical context of the different locations we visited. She went above and beyond and I loved how many different places we got to see across Italy here. As a first time intrepid traveler, highly recommend if you’ve never been to Italy. I recommend touring Rome on your own but the benefit of this trip is going across a number of smaller places and experiences that are harder to do on your own - harder to find the right restaurants, tours, best views, paths and more without an experienced guide in my opinion.

This trip is a fantastic way to hit a lot of major monuments, understand how locals live and are impacted by travel, and benefit from a tour leader. If you decided you are unable to complete a walk or don’t want to participate in an optional dinner you are never made to feel bad. This was a nice way to enjoy an evening/view point with my spouse. Serena, our tour leader, acted as our advocate through out our whole trip. She ensured our trip ran smoothly and never forced specific activities. Our tour leader was able to provide laundry options within or near the hotel which made packing less stressful. As a same sex couple we were safe in our group, a luxury that isn’t always guaranteed while traveling. Thank you Serena and Intrepid.
