Why you’ll love this trip
Explore Rome’s ancient wonders like the Colosseum (one of the Seven Wonders of the World), the Forum and Vatican City, immersing yourself in centuries of history and culture.
Discover the preserved ruins of Pompeii, offering a glimpse into daily Roman life before the city’s tragic fate under Mt Vesuvius in 79 AD.
Ascend Mt Vesuvius for breathtaking views over the Bay of Naples and witness the powerful crater of this still active volcano. Finish the day with a pizza tasting in Naples – the alleged birthplace of this beloved carb.
Experience Sorrento’s seaside charm and its famous lemon groves, tasting local limoncello and exploring its vibrant streets and cafes.
Wander the stunning Amalfi Coast, from historic Amalfi town to the dramatic landscapes of Ravello, offering unparalleled views.
Is this trip right for you?
The primary means of transportation on this trip is by train, offering fast travel across long distances without traffic delays, delivering you directly into city centres. Trains are comfortable and equipped with toilets but can be busy.
Please note that you'll have to carry your own luggage on and off the trains, as well as up and down stairs at stations and hotels. Please ensure your luggage adheres to our weight and size guidelines outlined in the 'Packing' section of the Essential Trip Information.
Summer temperatures in many visited regions can exceed 40c, so protect yourself from the sun and stay hydrated. Keep in mind that July, August and early September constitute high season along the Southern Italian coast, impacting local infrastructure due to increased visitor numbers.
Hotel rooms in Europe may differ from American or Australian standards, often featuring two single beds that can be pushed together instead of a double and shared bathrooms rather than en-suite facilities.
For those with extra time, consider extending your trip to explore more of Italy. Explore further south into the heel of Italy with our ‘Rome to Southern Italy’ trip (trip code ZMSSC) or head down to Sicily with our ‘Rome to Sicily’ trip (trip code ZMSFC).

2. Please note that the physical rating for this trip is set at 2. While this is correct for the overall trip, there are some components that are of a higher physical rating. Both the climb to the summit of Mt Vesuvius and the hike on the Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei) require a certain amount of fitness. 3. You don't have a lot of time in Rome at the start of the trip, so if you're keen to explore this spectacular city in depth we recommend you arrive a day or two before the start of the trip, especially if you would like to see the Vatican Museum as it is closed most Sundays. I enjoy Intrepid trips. Since my husband & I are retired we tend to plan a three week vacation. Within the time we like to include an Intrepid trip. It’s fun to meet up with like travel minds of different ages & countries. We especially like the small groups & the leaders. They are very knowledgable even though most places you meet up with a tour guide. I am the planner in our marriage so for the Intrepid part of our three weeks I know that I turn off my planning mode.

The Amalfi Coast trip was fantastic! Great experiences and places to visit and explore. The Path of the Gods was a "must do" experience as was the ruins of Pompeii! A great trip with a great Group Leader. Small group tours are definitely the way to go! So many wonderful, fun and memorable moments. Thank you Riccardo and Intrepid.

Rome to Amalfi with Marco was a great experience. Intrepid travelled Marco has it all organized with many different experiences for young and old alike. From age 20 to 74 we all got along well and enjoyed each experience as it evolved. This trip is for anyone wanting to enjoy south of Rome. History, nature, beauty of the coastline, various types of travel from train to minibus, ferry, and on foot, all was savoured and looked forward to each day. Thanks Marco for amazing leadership and thanks Intrepid for organizing this trip.
