Why you’ll love this trip
Eat, swim, sunbake, repeat – that’s what will happen when you get cruising along Turkey's Mediterranean coastline. The choice is yours if you’d like to go exploring or just relax on deck.
Delight your tastebuds with exceptional Turkish cuisine, from kebabs to coffee and the famous Ayvalik tost (a Turkish-style toasted sandwich). Then, head into a home of a local family, where you’ll be treated to a traditional home-cooked Turkish meal.
Wander ancient sites with a local leader – thought all the best Roman ruins were in Italy? Think again! Turkey is home to one of the best-preserved classics of Ephesus.
Explore the weird and wonderful world of Cappadocia – this might be the most unusual place in Turkey. Learn all about its fairy chimneys and sprawling rock formations from your expert local leader.
Wade through the scenic hot springs at Pamukkale – pure white calcium deposits that cascade down the cliffs overlooking the town are said to have magical healing properties.
Is this trip right for you?
You’ll get a taste of local life on this trip, with most travel done on public buses. This minimises our carbon footprint and gives you a real chance to interact with the local community. Most Turkish buses have wi-fi, in-seat entertainment and serve refreshments.
Lots of time allocated for optional activities means freedom and flexibility, but it does require a level of independence. Only are few meals are included, so mostly you'll find your own (with plenty of suggestions from your leader of course). This trip puts it in your hands with tonnes of free time. Maybe budget a little extra cash for activities that aren’t included.
The cobblestone streets, narrow steps and tiny bridges of Turkey are very romantic. They’re also another good reason to pack light and leave the wheeled suitcase at home. You'll have to carry your own luggage on and off the buses, so make sure it doesn’t exceed our weight and size recommendations. You can find specifics under ‘Packing’ in the ‘Essential Trip Information’ section.
Summer temperatures can be very high in Turkey (over 40°C), which can make things uncomfortable. It’s important to use sun protection, wear layers to combat the heat, and drink plenty of water. You’ll need walking shoes and a daypack to explore some of historical sites. The weather can be hot in July and August, but keep in mind that this is the best time to enjoy the clear water of the Mediterranean. It can also get cool in these destinations, particularly from October to April, so don't forget to pack extra layers if travelling at this time.

Itinerary
Coastal cruising to city schmoozing – see it all, Turkish style
Want to see the real Turkey with a small group of likeminded travellers? On this 15-day adventure, you'll discover the cultural melting pot of the landscape that straddles both Europe and the Middle East. Indulge in some incredible local bites (and maybe some shisha, too), explore ancient ruins and walk in the footsteps of Marc Antony and the Trojan army, making strong connections along the way. Wander Istanbul at your own pace, then hit the coast to swim and sunbake in the Dardanelles Strait, the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, sailing along the south coast. Learn about the practices of Sufism and the art and performance of the whirling dervish, then spend a few days getting to know otherworldly Cappadocia. Wander the fairy chimneys, get up early to see the iconic sight of hot air balloons floating along the city’s skyline and maybe even treat yourself to a ride at sunrise!

We had an amazing 15 days in Turkey on our Intrepid tour. Our guide Oz was professional, friendly and incredibly knowledgeable. Not only did we visit many beautiful sights in Turkey and gain a lot of historical knowledge, we also made friends for life.

Athe most incredible first group trip! Perfect combination of adventures, history, culture, socialization, and relaxation. Lots of travelling but worth it - just gives time to connect with others or rest up. Our guide Oz was amazing and we’ll miss him! Consider yourself lucky if you have him as your guide.

What truly made the trip amazing as was our tour guide, Özgür. His passion for Turkey’s culture, history, and traditions were so accurately explained, He has a gift for storytelling—whether he was explaining the complex details of the Ephesus, sharing local legends like the Trash lady. I would do it all over again ! Such an amazing trip !

My wife and I were apprehensive about booking our first ever tour and just hoped for a decent guide. Our guide blew us away with his knowledge and brilliance. We couldn’t recommend this tour enough. We only booked a basix tour but it felt closer to a premium the way it was ran.

This was my first solo trip abroad and I would highly recommend anyone to do this trip. Our leader Emre was so welcoming and helpful. We meet other guides along the way who I’m positive would be the same. I can’t fault this trip at all!

Kaan was an amazing trip leader. His calm, approachable and friendly nature only enhanced this trip. He always provided a detailed plan for each day. His knowledge was incredible and he was always open for questions and discussions. As a member who had dietary restrictions, Kaan always ensured there were safe options for me at all restaurants and assisted in communicating with the staff to ensure everything was safe. He allowed us a glimpse of Turkish culture eating at authentic restaurants, meeting locals and travelling as if we were a local - we experienced the culture and all turkey has to offer first hand. Overall, I could not fault his performance as our trip leader and would happily participate in any tour he was coordinating in the future. This trip was truly a trip of a lifetime.

This Real Turkey experience with Intrepid is highly recommended for anyone wanting a rich, authentic journey beyond typical tourist routes. from the vibrant bazaars and historic mosques of Istanbul, to the surreal landscapes of Cappadocia with its fairy chimneys and cave dwellings, and the ancient ruins of Ephesus steeped in history. Ilter was an excellent guide who made our experience so much better! The trip was perfectly balanced with immersive activities, delicious local cuisine, and moments to relax and connect with fellow travellers. I especially valued the focus on Responsible Tourism, supporting local communities and respecting traditions

Great turkey trip overall! Our guide was fantastic, the group lovely, and the itinerary well-balanced. Cappadocia was a highlight, though extras like balloon rides are pricey if you book in advance. Konya felt skippable. Night bus was tough. Hotels basic, but fine. Would love more time in Istanbul at the end. Still, highly recommend the experience!

Real Turkey gives you a great glimpse of all that Turkey has to offer. I had no expectations of this trip and I’ve come back home in awe! Definitely worth doing a trip to experience the differences between all of the provinces. Cotton castle, Ephesus and sailing the Mediterranean with homemade lunch are definite highlights. Let’s not forget the hot air balloons in Cappadocia too! But the best part is sharing this experience with a knowledgeable guide (thanks Ilter!) and like minded people, in a country that is kind and hospitable. The people I was with definitely made the trip all the more worth while.
