Why you’ll love this trip
Walk the walk on the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall of China (one of the Seven Wonders of the World), watching the stones snake as far as the eye can see. If you’d like, you can even toboggan back down!
Take a scenic cycling tour through farms and villages in Yangshuo’s karst-dotted countryside. Every turn in the road brings you to another postcard-perfect spot before riding to Moon Hill and taking a short hike that leads to panoramic views of the area.
Watch rolly polly baby pandas playing, munching bamboo and generally doing their thing at the Panda Breeding Centre in Chengdu – if they’re not already, pandas might just be your favourite animal after this.
Join a local guide to see the Terracotta Warriors in Xi'an – the most famous site in the city – only discovered in 1976 by farmers digging a well.
Eat your way through China, from Beijing’s Peking duck to the delicious Sichuan pepper – then, maybe challenge yourself with authentic local delicacies like silkworms, spicy rabbit head and beer fish.
Is this trip right for you?
This trip packs a lot into a short amount of time, with very little time spent in Beijing and Hong Kong – it’s recommended that you extend your stay in these locations before and after your trip if you want to explore them in depth.
The primary means of transportation on this trip is public transport. You'll have to carry your own luggage on and off trains and buses, as well as some short distances to your accommodation. Make sure your bag doesn’t exceed our weight and size recommendations. You can find details in the 'Packing' section of the Essential Trip Information. The overnight train included on this trip is in ‘hard sleeper’ class, meaning carriages are sectioned off with six sleepers per compartment in tiers of three. It’s not luxury but efficient and a way to spend time with local travellers.
You will easily surpass your 10,000 steps a day on this trip, in fact most travellers are surprised at how much distance they end up covering! Make sure your shoes are comfy enough to spend most days on your feet.
China’s world-class sites and experiences draw large numbers of local and international travellers. We recommend a little patience and comfortable shoes as you may need to wait before entering the more popular locations on your itinerary. Please review the Itinerary for tickets you may need to purchase in advance.
Itinerary
From an ancient Wonder of the World to pandas and karst mountains
You could travel for a lifetime in China, and there would still be more to explore – but this 12-day trip through the country’s highlights does a pretty good job of narrowing it down. Tick an ancient Wonder of the World off your bucket list at the Great Wall, witness the Terracotta Warriors in Xi-an and watch baby pandas play in Chengdu. Sip tea in People’s Park, taste delicious street food with a local leader who knows all the best spots and cycle through the misty countryside of Yangshuo – home to stunning vistas, Moon Hill and karst mountains. Start in Beijing and end in Hong Kong for some thriving nightlife and you’ve got a pretty cool adventure.

After planning to go to China for a while, this trip far exceeded my expectations and was a brilliant journey through the country. Mark, our guide, was incredibly organised and approachable. Incredible value for this trip!

The Leader/tour guide for the trip, Tanya Tian (Ting), was amazing! The tour was organised and she was extremely knowledgeable, bringing energy, laughter and reassurance to the group even when unforeseen changes occurred (a typhoon). The tour itself was fantastic and I would highly recommend to anyone looking to visit China. However, there was a lack of organisation relating to pre-trip admin. Intrepid were slow to provide me with the necessary documents to support my VISA application and initially these were incorrect. Therefore, I have given the overall score an 8/10 but would give 10/10 to both Tanya as our fantastic tour leader/guide and the trip itself.

An amazing trip that allows you to see so much of China in a short time and we loved the less well known areas of the itinerary the most! Definitely recommend adding on extra nights in Beijing and Hong Kong to make the most of them. A fantastic, happy, calm and lovely tour leader made the trip as great as possible. Adding on extra optional activities was so easy and the leader organised everything, just be aware some of them are fairly pricey. A typhoon cancelled one of our trains leaving us stranded in an unexpected city and within 2 hours the leader had arranged a coach, new activity and new 4 star hotel for the night so we were chuffed. A smooth and successful experience in unavoidable circumstances. One other thing to consider is extra costs on transport - our leader suggested £60 per person in the group to allow for more convenient and faster transport to our activities in a minibus instead of public transport. This made a huge difference to the trip’s enjoyment but something we wish had just been included in the overall price of the trip to begin with as it was an unexpected additional cost. Otherwise I couldn’t recommend it more we had the best time with a great group and good accommodation - be prepared for very basic but definitely comfortable and clean.

This tour was go go and full of different experiences, events and historical sites. It is one that is a must do if you’d like to experiences China and having Mark as your guide is a blast. He will ensure all is taken care of and recommends the best restaurants and activities. He is a wealth of knowledge in not only history, but also Mahjong too (recommend learning). I’d take this tour again for sure.

This was an AMAZING trip! I was literally excited every day for the activities and the food. We were able to do so much in a relatively short period of time, which would’ve been impossible to plan on my own. I was also amazed at how well our group got along, and how well our leader Mark organized everything!

This trip was amazing! Our leader Mark was engaging and enthusiastic and made us feel so supported. Some notes: - guide will help ensure you find food—lots of group meals (optional) as well as assistance with ordering and recommendations. - accommodations were basic but sufficient—king bed, clean sheets/towels, A/C at every hotel. - optional activities are affordable and led by guide so highly recommended them.

I enjoyed this tour, as it included the main attractions. However, it was cycling in Yangshuo (rural town in China) that made it memorable for me. A good balance of the cities and rural towns of China. Thank you to my tour guide Mark Chen for making my first trip to China extra special with his knowledge, recommendations and easy going personality.
