Trip Informations
Encounter a country that radiates warmth – from its glorious sunshine to its spice-laden cuisine and kind local people. This nine-day Premium adventure through Sri Lanka will introduce you to the country’s wealth of cultural riches as you explore the ancient ruins of past civilisations, spot rare and beautiful creatures in their natural habitats and relax among swathes of green tea fields at a hilltop retreat. Receive a warm welcome from the locals as you meet local guides, tuck into homecooked food, stay in an 1891 Feature Stay and uncover the secrets of Sigiriya – Sri Lanka’s famed UNESCO World Heritage site. Discover a shining gem in the Indian ocean – the teardrop isle.
Why you’ll love this trip
Learn about the country’s past during your Feature Stay at the gorgeous Grand Hotel in Nuwara Eliya – established in 1891, this traditional-style hotel has a modern outlook on sustainable practices.
Discover the beauty and mastery of Sri Lanka’s craft traditions and try them for yourself – from brass making and pottery to woodwork and ancient palm leaf writing.
Get an exclusive and immersive look at rural life in Ambagasthenna, where you’ll walk through tea plantations and paddy fields and learn about sustainable farming with a local guide.
Spot elephants, monkeys and tropical birds on a safari through the wild grasslands of Minneriya National Park.
Uncover ancient treasures in Sri Lanka’s cultural triangle as you explore the temples, ruins and stupas of Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa and Kandy with the expert guidance of your local leader.
Is this trip right for you?
The Rock Fortress – or Lion Rock – of Sigiriya is spectacular. However, those with a fear of (or even an aversion to) heights may wish to sit the excursion out. Scaling the rock involves walking up lots of rough, narrow steps and tight walkways.
There are a couple of long travel days on this trip. Journeys may take up to five hours but are a great opportunity to get to know locals, fellow travellers and the diverse scenery.
Some temples on this trip require your head to be uncovered when visiting. You can opt out of temple visits if this requirement doesn't suit you.

I was very lucky to be part of a small group (5 people in total) and had a wonderful time during this tour. Niranjala, our guide, was excellent and so were our driver and his assistant (Newton and Aruna). The country side in Sri Lanka is absolutely beautiful and the local people are humble, hospitable and friendly. The accomodation was great and the food was delicious and abundant. For me, the highlight of the trip was seeing the wild elephants in their natural habitat during the safari. There were so many other memorable moments during the trip though. Everyone is our group was easy going and we had a very nice time together.

I was a solo traveller with the 9-day Premium Sri Lanka tour in April 2026. A beautiful land with people to match. Our guide Arnie (aka Kandy Man) was wonderful with his jovial laughter and undivided dedication to our needs from our first meeting to the farewell and beyond. After doing two Intrepid trips previously, this was my first ‘premium’ experience and I was pleasantly satisfied with the upgrades to accommodation, transport comfort and the most amazing cuisine for all meals consumed.  Aside from meat options readily available, vegetarian and vegan travellers should really consider this trip because the food varieties are so vast and fabulous. The food is so satisfying that one could easily get by on only the provided meals if they wanted to. The upscale hotel breakfast buffets are an incredible experience in themselves.  Most key activities are provided in the tour although the optional cultural dance show in Kandy (1hr for AUD10 equivalent) is an absolute must. This tour was a fine introductory experience of a wonderful country and people packed into a compact 9 days and comes highly recommended.

I can’t speak highly enough of our 9 day Premium Sri Lanka trip. Original and Comfort styles are great but Premium felt like luxury but still with the Intrepid philosophy of supporting local initiatives with small group numbers. Our guide Upul was brilliant. He was excellently supported by our driver Vijitha who kept us safe amongst some challenging bus drivers 😁 Sujith, assistant trip support was also excellent. The scenery was beautiful. The food was amazing. A brilliant place to visit and we want to return to explore further. Thanks Intrepid!

We had a great tour of Sri Lanka with Intrepid. Our premium tour experience was excellent, and our tour leader, Rumesh was fantastic. I would not hesitate to recommend Intrepid and this tour.

I would thoroughly recommend this 8 day trip. I felt like I really got to know Sri Lanka as our tour leader Rumesh gave us so much information at each point. The trip was well planned, super interesting and we had luxury travel with our air conditioned, comfortable bus and our driver Samantha drove us very safely. The accommodation was very varied and mostly excellent and we saw so much nature, learning about the animals and produce of Sri Lanka. The highlights for me were the elephant safari and the visits to the local family homes
