Trip Informations
Experience Japan’s perfect harmony of ancient tradition and modern life on this 12-day Premium adventure through the cultural heart of the country. You’ll start among Tokyo’s soaring skyscrapers, then make your way to Hakone’s mountainous hot springs, where you’ll learn the meaning of true relaxation in a cloud of fragrant steam. See the Edo-period beauty of Takayama and be immersed in charming countryside life in Shirakawa-go before discovering the intriguing cultural diversity of Kyoto. Visit the powerful memorial and museum in Hiroshima, take a sushi-making class with an expert, soak away your worries in an onsen and travel with a local leader who’ll share the rich variety of their country as you visit temples, castles, shrines and holy mountains.
Why you’ll love this trip
Unwind surrounded by the beauty of nature at your Feature Stay accommodation in the hot spring town of Hakone – with mountain views, a traditional ryokan design, modern comforts and a private onsen (thermal pool) for each room, you’ll find relaxation here!
Soak up some quintessentially Japanese Exclusive Experiences, including a sushi-making class and a guided meditation with a Zen Buddhist monk.
Visit the sobering Hiroshima Peace Park and be reminded of this city’s history with a guided tour. Learn about how the city is recovering and is now dedicated to promoting world peace.
Soak up Japan’s natural beauty – with stays in mountainous Hakone, glimpses of Mt Fuji and a stroll around the island of Miyajima with its famous floating torii (gate), plus views of the Japanese alps in the ancient village of Shirakawa-go.
Explore Tokyo – wander Asakusa (the temple district), explore the buzzing Shibuya district, find a treat in a depachika (underground food hall), discover the eccentric Harajuku district and get a bird’s-eye view of the city from the Tokyo Skytree.
Is this trip right for you?
Japan is best explored on foot and by public transport. You’ll need to be fit enough to spend most of each day on your feet and able to handle your luggage as you navigate busy train stations. We recommend comfortable shoes and packing light.
Double rooms in Japanese hotels can be smaller than you may be used to (for example, 20 sq m). Every effort will be made to accommodate double room requests. However, during busy periods, there may be occasions when we are unable to offer a double room, so a twin room will be provided.

The premium Japan Trip was a full and amazing experience. Through our travels to huge cities and smaller towns throughout Japan, I have gained a good appreciation of the culture, history, and food of this country. There is a lot of walking and public transportation so be prepared! However, I found that that this aspect further contributed to my appreciation of the culture. Our group leader, Yuka, was great. She was highly organized, patient, kind, and provided excellent communication. She always ensured that everyone in our group was taken care of. I would definitely recommend this trip.

Our Premium 12 day tour of Japan was an excellent experience. What made it outstanding was our wonderful guide, Susumu and our very friendly group. We enjoyed a great cross section of Japanese culture and experiences. The tour was well organised and ran very smoothly.

Travelling with Intrepid tours was an amazing experience from start to finish. The smaller group style made the whole journey feel personal, relaxed and much more enjoyable then larger group tours. We loved being able to explore places in a more authentic way, with plenty of flexibility and opportunities to connect with the local culture. What truly made the trip special was the knowledge of our local guide Yuka, and the experiences we would have never discovered on our own. I would highly recommend Intrepid Tours to anyone wanting a more meaningful, personal and enjoyable way to see the world.

Great trip and Hiro is excellent leader. Experienced a real Japan. Lots of local travel via trains, buses etc rather than taxi or coach. Get fit beforehand. 10-15 thousand steps per day. We prepared before and are also now greatful for improved fitness. Would not recommend trip to limitrd physical ability people.
