Trip Informations
Why you’ll love this trip
Journey this mostly coastal walk to Santiago de Compostela – a lesser-known trail with fewer pilgrims along the way.
Feast on some of the best Spanish seafood and Albarino wine in Arcade, on a substantial lunch stop on the way to Pontevedra.
Trek a fair distance each day, but be able to relax along the way, with a dedicated rest day in Pontevedra.
Take a load off – literally! Your luggage will be transferred between your accommodation each day, meaning you’ll only have to carry a day pack, and your luggage will be waiting at your hotel.
Visit one of the local wineries in the region of Caldas de Rei and have the opportunity to soak in the renowned hot springs in the area.
Is this trip right for you?
This is a walking trip. You need to be in good health to complete the walks. Please ensure you bring sturdy walking shoes and comfortable clothes. To make the most of the trip, it's best if you have at least a moderate level of fitness.
There are sections on the walk where it will not be possible to call in a taxi or any other transport.
Your main luggage will be transported between stops, but you will still carry a daypack with the essentials, such as water, snacks, a raincoat and so on.
The diversity of the seasons here makes for incredible scenery, but the weather in this region can be unpredictable. It’s best to wear layers at all times of the year in case conditions change during the day.
While this route is called Portuguese Camino, most of the walking is done on the Spanish territory.
We recommend packing light and smart for this trip as you'll be required to carry your own luggage at times, which can include going up and down multiple flights of stairs, and across cobblestones.
Itinerary
Embrace the challenge and fulfillment of this coastal Camino
Challenge yourself to a journey from pretty Porto to the historic Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela on a 10-day alternative coastal Camino trail. This Portuguese Camino trail passes through coastal Baiona, Vigo and Redondela, and joins the pilgrim route onwards to Pontevedra, Caldas de Reis and Padron, finishing in Santiago de Compostela. You’ll embark on a journey through the countryside in mostly north-western Spain, retracing the ‘Way of Saint James’, trekking past the Bay of Vigo and visiting old churches and quaint villages. As one of the three most important Christian pilgrimages, you’ll take part in a powerful journey through some idyllic landscapes and beautiful towns.

This is an incredible trip that you learn so much from. Not only about the Camino but you’ll learn about yourself. I would highly recommend this trip. Someone told me that there’s a difference between a tourist and a traveler. On this trip you a definitely a Traveler.

I wondered if this trip could be as life changing as others have said… it's true! The Camino opens up extraordinary opportunities to meet wonderful people to laugh, cry, share your story with - the more you give to it and others, the more you're left with. Armando, you enabled us to become such a close Camino crew, thank you for being you.

If you are thinking about this trip then my advice is do it! You need to be fairly fit (some of the hills are quite steep) but as a group you get to the top! The joy of walking through beautiful countryside and along gorgeous coastline is worth it. You learn so much along the way … about yourself and the beautiful country. The ending is spectacular … a real tear jerker moment! I loved it 😁

Armando was a great leader. Met many wonderful people on this tour in our group. If you are not into interacting with people this probably isn’t the right fit for you. Enjoyed the well laid out walks each day. Did not find the hiking that challenging. I highly recommend trail running shoes. Lucked out with fantastic weather. Would love to see a French Camiño tour. This was my 2nd intrepid tour. Can’t wait for the next journey!

This journey tested and inspired me. Our guide, Oswaldo, was the heart of it all- energetic, caring, and endlessly supportive. His leadership made our Camino not just a walk, but a shared pilgrimage to remember. We began as strangers and ended before the cathedral as friends.

This really is an exceptional trip and I would highly recommend it. It was my first time travelling with intrepid (or any travel company) and every step of the way had been curated meticulously to really showcase Galicia at its best - the hotels, the food, the additional experiences. Each days walking was manageable for anyone of average fitness - typically stopping for mid morning coffee break, lunch and then maybe a refreshment on the home straight, before arriving at the destination in the mid-late afternoon with plenty of time to rest before dinner with the group in the evening. Our tour leader, Oswaldo, has incredible enthusiasm for both Galicia and the Camino. He has a special talent at gelling the group together (within a couple of days it felt we had known each other for months). He went above and beyond - acting not only as a tour guide, but a historian, horticulturalist and entertainer… and more! His energy is infectious, and he invests time getting to know everyone along “the way”. He really is the best in the business!
