Trip Informations
Why you’ll love this trip
Journey this mostly coastal walk to Santiago de Compostela – a lesser-known trail with fewer pilgrims along the way.
Feast on some of the best Spanish seafood and Albarino wine in Arcade, on a substantial lunch stop on the way to Pontevedra.
Trek a fair distance each day, but be able to relax along the way, with a dedicated rest day in seaside Vigo.
Take a load off – literally! Your luggage will be transferred between your accommodation each day, meaning you’ll only have to carry a day pack, and your luggage will be waiting at your hotel.
Visit one of the local wineries in the region of Caldas de Rei and have the opportunity to soak in the renowned hot springs in the area.
Is this trip right for you?
This is a walking trip. You need to be in good health to complete the walks. Please ensure you bring sturdy walking shoes and comfortable clothes. To make the most of the trip, it's best if you have at least a moderate level of fitness.
There are sections on the walk where it will not be possible to call in a taxi or any other transport.
Your main luggage will be transported between stops, but you will still carry a daypack with the essentials, such as water, snacks, a raincoat and so on.
The diversity of the seasons here makes for incredible scenery, but the weather in this region can be unpredictable. It’s best to wear layers at all times of the year in case conditions change during the day.
While this route is called Portuguese Camino, most of the walking is done on the Spanish territory.
We recommend packing light and smart for this trip as you'll be required to carry your own luggage at times, which can include going up and down multiple flights of stairs, and across cobblestones.

Itinerary
Embrace the challenge and fulfillment of this coastal Camino
Challenge yourself to a journey from pretty Porto to the historic Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela on a 10-day alternative coastal Camino trail. This Portuguese Camino trail passes through coastal Baiona, Vigo and Redondela, and joins the pilgrim route onwards to Pontevedra, Caldas de Reis and Padron, finishing in Santiago de Compostela. You’ll embark on a journey through the countryside in mostly north-western Spain, retracing the ‘Way of Saint James’, trekking past the Bay of Vigo and visiting old churches and quaint villages. As one of the three most important Christian pilgrimages, you’ll take part in a powerful journey through some idyllic landscapes and beautiful towns.

Our guide, Eli, was knowledgeable regarding the local histories of the areas we passed through. She had sourced some absolutely amazing places for lunch along the way and gave great recommendations for our independant dinners. She was organised and punctual. Eli made sure all needs were met through very challenging and difficult times with ever changing dynamics within the group. Handling thing with grace and maturity. The itineraries were explained each morning, keeping evrone abreast of the routes and planned stops. Safety was key to our guide, she was in constant contact with us if we separated along the way, a difficult task for her given that we were 12 strong willed women with varied levels of pace and fitness. Transfers and luggage movement were seamless.Well done to Eli and would highly recommend.

The Portuguese Camino has been a must do experience for over a year. I have prepared myself by training everyday until I achieved a certain goal. This facilitated my wonderful experience. I thank Intrepid Travel for providing this opportunity for me.

The Portuguese Camino was a wonderful experience. We walked along beautiful coastline and through forests as well as through local villages. It was challenging and rewarding. We are lots of yummy seafood as well as local dishes. Our tour guide (Oswaldo) was one of the best I’ve encountered.

A thoroughly enjoyable and culturally enriching experience. I learnt so much about Galician and Spanish culture and history that I did not know. Our guide was kind and generous with his time and knowledge. He genuinely cared and facilitated a brilliant experience for all group members. The scenery and food was both varied and stunning.
