Trip Informations
From the neon-lit streets of Tokyo to the tranquil hot springs of Noboribetsu, this 12-day journey across Northern Japan immerses you in the country’s rich tapestry of culture, history and natural beauty. Zip north on a bullet train to Aomori, where you can visit prehistoric sites and fresh seafood markets. Peruse the Hakodate Fish Market in search of fresh oysters, then take in panoramic views of the historic star-shaped fort at Goryokaku. Soak in volcanic hot springs, paddle across lakes, watch a dumpling-making demonstration and discover the vibrant spirit of Hokkaido. After wandering the vivid flower fields of Furano, end your adventure in Sapporo, where modern energy meets great mountainous views. Japan’s colourful wonders await – are you ready?
Why you’ll love this trip
Discover Hokkaido’s rich indigenous Ainu culture at the region’s first Ainu Museum, where you’ll learn about their traditions and make Ainu dumplings.
Explore northern Japan’s natural wonders, like the volcanic steam and bubbling hot springs of Hell Valley, Hokkaido’s highest peak at Mt Asahi and the serene waters of Lake Shikotsu.
Walk around Hirosaki Castle on a guided tour, where you’ll learn about its role in the Neputa Festival – known for its giant, vibrant floats.
Stay in two local ryokan hotels (traditional inns) where you’ll unwind in the soothing waters of Japanese onsens and savour a signature, multi-course kaiseki dinner.
Witness Japan’s seasonal transformations from cherry blossoms in spring and lavender fields in summer to vibrant autumn foliage and white winter snow – every season offers its own unique colour palette.
Is this trip right for you?
Japan is best explored on foot and by public transport. You’ll need to be fit enough to spend most of each day on your feet and able to handle your luggage as you navigate busy train stations. We recommend comfortable shoes and packing light.
Japanese train connections are typically centred around major cities, so travelling to smaller towns and cities often requires passing through these larger hubs.
This trip includes a canoeing activity which isn’t too demanding but requires a good level of fitness to fully enjoy the experience.
This trip is a great way to see a lot in a short period of time, and it can be part of a longer itinerary if you have more time to explore. You might like to check out our Japan Adventure (CJSHC) trip.
Double rooms in Japanese hotels can be smaller than you may be used to (for example, 20 sq m). Every effort will be made to accommodate double room requests. However, during busy periods, there may be occasions when we are unable to offer a double room, so a twin room will be provided.

I did this tour in combination with the Japan Highlights tour. Compared to the first leg, exploring Hokkaido involved more longer travel days (as we went into more rural areas) but overall a slower pace with one or two key things to see in each place rather than rushing around a city to cram everything into one day. I had a great time seeing the spectacular natural landscapes, with highlights being Lake Shikotsu and the mountains in Furano.

We really enjoyed our trip. It felt that the tour covered the north part of Japan well, and had a good range of activities. It is a good tour for people who prefer a slower paced and less crowded Japan. Also, it was nice seeing the cherry blossoms come out though I would have went later to see the full bloom.

Intrepid Northern Japan and Hokkaido tour with Michiko was the best experience. It was my husband and i’s second trip to Japan so we decided we wanted to see some more of the country other than the big city’s. This is the perfect trip for that. Michiko is so knowledgeable on the history and culture of every area.

Absoloutely fantastic trip, made all the better by our guide. Going in March-April let's you see the cherry-blossoms in Tokyo as you meet your tour and also the snow in Hokkaido when you get there, so you get to see a whole lot.

A great way to experience Hokkaido first hand. Going in early March means some snow, but the locals are well prepared and it gives some very pretty views.

Having a truly local guide made my visit easy to enjoy and enabled me to interact more with other locals. I liked not having to worry about logistics and got to experience a hot soak in onsen under the stars while the snow was falling. This was a magical trip to be talked about for years to come.

We had a great time. Our leader was very knowledgeable, and fun to travel with. We were well looked after and learnt a lot about Hokkaido. The sustainability focus was an added bonus.

Highly recommend this tour if it's your second time visiting Japan and you are looking for something off the beaten path. Enjoyable and different in winter and spring.

Northern Japan especially Hokkaido has so much to offer the adventurous traveler from nature, culture, history, food and the chance to see and experience natural wonders of Japan. Mid November exposure to snowfall which was an excellent experience.
