Trip Informations
Get to know a different side of New Zealand's North and South Islands on an epic adventure with a local leader. Start in the north, with its geothermal landscapes, Maori culture and remote backroads. Learn to shuck oysters from Maori locals in Ohiwa Harbour, and maybe go whitewater rafting in Rotorua. Follow the Forgotten World Highway to the quirky Republic of Whangamomona. Hike on a volcano and head underground to see glowworms. Then, explore the narrow strip of land sandwiched between the mountains and the Tasman Sea in the south. Millions of years of natural history are right in front of you, while the much more recent stories of the gold and coal rush can be found in heritage settlements. Wander through Christchurch and Queenstown, see Pancake Rocks and try craft gin – all while surrounded by gorgeous natural landscapes.
Why you’ll love this trip
Cruise Ohiwa Harbour in the Bay of Plenty, then visit a Maori-owned and operated oyster farm, where you’ll learn to shuck oysters before tucking into a fresh kaimoana (seafood) dinner.
Journey along the historic and remote Forgotten World Highway and spend the night in the quirky Republic of Whangamomona.
Go subterranean into Spellbound Cave for a private glowworm tour on foot and by boat, with plenty of time for photos to capture these bioluminescent creatures.
Go deeper into the history of the area with stories of the goldrush days during visits to Reefton, Kumara on the South Island.
Witness the stunning, millions-of-year-old scenery at the dramatic Pancake Rocks and Hokitika Gorge, and spot fur seals at Cape Foulwind.
Is this trip right for you?
This trip involves some walking over varied terrain and is best suited to travellers with a good level of mobility. Details on physical activities can be found in the itinerary.
As this is a combination of 2 trips, your leader and the composition of your group may change in Christchurch on Day 8.
The flight between Auckland and Christchurch is included in the price of the trip, however you will be unaccompanied by a leader.
