Trip Informations
Why you’ll love this trip
Explore the Serengeti, a wildlife arena like no other. You're bound to spot most of Africa's iconic Big Five game on your adventures at sunrise and sunset – when the animals are most active.
Meet with local community members and join in on village activities in Mto wa Mbu with a guided stroll around the farming areas.
Travel in an open-roof 4WD vehicle across the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater with your small group for the chance to see the endangered black rhinoceros up close.
Wander around Stone Town’s bustling bazaars and fragrant spice markets, and consider extending your stay on the Northern Beaches – full of sun, surf and seafood.
Accompanied by a knowledgeable local crew — a leader, driver and cook – you'll be in excellent hands for the duration of your adventure.
Is this trip right for you?
No two journeys in Africa are identical. There will be many early starts either to make use of the better safari time or to beat the morning traffic on long travel days. Be prepared for travel times to be longer or shorter than advised. Weather and road conditions can change things significantly, so embrace the detours, shortcuts, and unforgettable moments along the way.
This is a participatory overland camping trip. That means you’ll be travelling with a group in a purpose-built vehicle, visiting remote communities, setting up your tent, helping out with camp chores, occasionally roughing it in the bush with no facilities, and getting the best possible views of iconic African wildlife. For more info on this style of travel, see our Africa overland page at tuuur.com/africa/overland.
Camping in the Serengeti National Park with no barriers between you and the animals is amazing, but it's important to heed the safety advice of your leader. You'll be briefed on arrival.
At Usambara Mountains, you'll hike to the beautiful Irente viewpoint. The walk is not overly strenuous, but you'll need to be reasonably fit.
The day-to-day itinerary features a selection of optional activities. Please note that this list is not exhaustive and is intended only as a guide. Prices are approximate and may change at the discretion of the local provider. All activities are subject to availability.
Itinerary
Serengeti safaris, local villages and Zanzibar’s colourful coastline
Watching a sunrise over the wide-open plains of the Serengeti is one of those ‘pinch me’ moments, and on this nine-day, it won’t be the only one. Beginning in Nairobi, take a trip into the countryside to Mto wa Mbu, get a safari fix in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, change up the altitude with walks around the Usambara Mountains and ferry to Zanzibar’s white-sand beaches and intriguing Old Town. This east Africa adventure will leave you with a greater appreciation of the stunning beauty of this part of the world and the people and wildlife that call it home.

A profoundly life-changing experience. This trip was full of amazing people, wildlife and vistas. I left Africa with unforgettable memories and many new friends. Thanks to our fantastic group leaders Dolly, Joy and Odoyo (and the many guides along the way) for sharing their kindness, knowledge and stories with us - making the trip even more meaningful.

This is a fast paced trip with some very long days in the truck, but the rewards are worth it! We used the truck days to socialise and have fun getting to know the group. Be prepared for some early starts, its not relaxing until you reach the village, but who comes on an Intrepid trip to relax.??? :-) Safari is awesome. !

A fabulous and cost effective way to visit the Serengeti and Ngorongoro crater with the mountains and Zanzibar included. There are lots of early starts and long drives but they are totally worth it. Don’t hesitate to book this tour. We had a fab group with mixed ages from 15-60 from UK, Aus, US, Switzerland. I had never camped before but enjoyed the experience!

Plenty of long drives and early mornings but a great safari nonetheless. Village walks were a lot of fun and highly informative and the game drives were amazing and we saw plenty of animals. The Usambara mountains were really beautiful and felt well off the beaten track.

Really loved the variety this trip provided. The safari trip in the Serengeti blew my mind and will stay with me for a long time. The trip to the Usambara Mountains was very interesting and a total contrast to the safari part. Trip was well organised and the staff were all very helpful.
