Get an authentic taste of Mexico on a journey through some of the country’s most famous culinary regions. Meander through Oaxaca’s aromatic markets with a local chef, take to the streets of Puebla to sample some the city’s local specialties and tuck into tasty treats in Mexico City. Your local leader will help you dig into the culture and history of Mexico with walking tours, visits to ancient ruins and local markets. If you’re after cultural richness, authentic experiences and flavoursome food, this is the adventure for you.
Why you’ll love this trip
Kick off your adventure with a local food tasting in Mexico City – your chance to try the authentic version of one of the most popular cuisines in the world.
Get hands-on with a market visit and cooking class with a local chef in Oaxaca and learn about a signature Mexican drink at a mezcal tasting session.
Visit the community of San Pedro Tlahuac, where Nahuatl descendants preserve traditions from pre-Columbian times, including chinampa farming, fiestas and ceremonies from ancient days.
Dig into the culture and history of Mexico during a walking tour of Mexico City’s historical centre and a visit to the ancient Mitla ruins.
Get to the source of some of the nation's most iconic foods, including churros, barbacoa, tamales, tortillas, elotes and mole.
Is this trip right for you?
The cuisine of Mexico includes a lot of meat and seafood. For vegetarians and vegans, we recommend reviewing the itinerary and inclusions to ensure that you will be able to fully participate and enjoy this trip. We offer many other trips to Mexico which can accommodate a range of dietary requirements.
Mexico's climate is hot and humid. Wear loose clothing and make sure you stay hydrated, especially while out on walking tours. You can expect to walk a lot on this trip and the terrain is often steep. Make sure to pack a jacket for the higher altitude cities like Mexico City and Puebla.
Mexico is a big country and you will be covering a fair amount of ground on this trip, so be prepared for some long drives. Please read the itinerary carefully for travel time estimates.
This trip visits places that are at high altitude, and as a result some people can suffer from altitude sickness, regardless of age or physical health. Please see the Medical and health information section of the Essential Trip Information for more detail.

Memo’s passion for food and Mexico is contagious—this trip will have you falling in love with both! It’s a true culinary adventure, so come hungry—you’ll be eating a lot! I especially loved the dynamic mix of vibrant street food and exquisite fine dining.

JJ was a great guide, and the pace felt just right with good inclusions. We got a real taste of Mexican cuisine. Highlights included the Mercado, the farm visit in Tláhuac, and the mezcalería. I also loved all three cities we visited, highly recommend!

This tour gave me a fabulous introduction to Mexican history and culture. We tried so many different food and drink that I wouldn’t have tried myself if I hadn’t had our fabulous guide Gonzalo with us. I found this to be the perfect length for our trip and the transport between each city was brilliant too.

This was our second Intrepid trip and it was wonderful to explore Mexico with Gonzalo - he really made our trip memorable and made sure we all had a great time, tasting lots of foods we wouldn’t have found on our own!

This is a great tour if you want to see a lot in a short space of time. The food elements are wide ranging and all delicious. I visited during Easter week, which was a fascinating time to discover more about the culture of Mexico and see some aspects you wouldn't usually encounter.

It was our first time taking a tour like this. Our local guide, Valentina, was excellent and we got to experience so much of Mexico's wonderful food and culture in a short time.

A great tour with Gonzalo, who went above and beyond to ensure safety and maximum enjoyment for the group. Although this is a food focused tour there were plenty of activities relating to the cultural and historic aspects of Mexico, plus there was plenty of free time to explore independently. Also, the food was delicious!! We highly recommend.
