If you’re after cultural richness, authentic experiences and flavoursome food, this is the adventure for you.
Why you’ll love this trip
Kick off your adventure with a local food tasting in Mexico City – your chance to try the authentic version of one of the most popular cuisines in the world.
Get hands-on with a market visit and cooking class with a local chef in Oaxaca and learn about a signature Mexican drink at a mezcal tasting session.
Visit the community of San Pedro Tlahuac, where Nahuatl descendants preserve traditions from pre-Columbian times, including chinampa farming, fiestas and ceremonies from ancient days.
Dig into the culture and history of Mexico during a walking tour of Mexico City’s historical centre and a visit to the ancient Mitla ruins.
Get to the source of some of the nation's most iconic foods, including churros, barbacoa, tamales, tortillas, elotes and mole.
Is this trip right for you?
The cuisine of Mexico includes a lot of meat and seafood. For vegetarians and vegans, we recommend reviewing the itinerary and inclusions to ensure that you will be able to fully participate and enjoy this trip. We offer many other trips to Mexico which can accommodate a range of dietary requirements.
Mexico's climate is hot and humid. Wear loose clothing and make sure you stay hydrated, especially while out on walking tours. You can expect to walk a lot on this trip and the terrain is often steep. Make sure to pack a jacket for the higher altitude cities like Mexico City and Puebla.
Mexico is a big country and you will be covering a fair amount of ground on this trip, so be prepared for some long drives. Please read the itinerary carefully for travel time estimates.
This trip visits places that are at high altitude, and as a result some people can suffer from altitude sickness, regardless of age or physical health. Please see the Medical and health information section of the Essential Trip Information for more detail.

Our Mexican food tour was a wonderful experience. The group was small, the activities very interesting and the information about food and culture insightful. It gave us a much richer experience of Mexico than we would otherwise have had.

A superb and inspiring trip with the warm, knowledgeable and enthusiastic tour leader Valeria. I loved eating my way through Mexico's Street food and markets. Oaxaca, the chinampa visit and the cooking class were highlights.

Having Gonzalo as our tour leader felt like being on vacation with a friend! His experience and understanding of how food and culture influence each other added so much depth to our trip, and expanded my palette beyond anything I would have normally tried. My first trip to Mexico, and it went so well it will not be my last!

This trip was amazing, it really felt like an accelerated course on Mexican food and culture. Gonzalo was an excellent guide, we got way more out of this trip than we could have traveling on our own.

An interesting journey into Mexico and the food of the people. Some good food and some average food but I believe it’s a genuine reflection of everyday Mexican life !

The Intrepid Mexico Food tour was a wonderful experience! It helped that we were here the week before Dia de los Muertos! Oaxaca and Puebla were particularly colorful and vibrant! The food was excellent and we had the opportunity to try a multitude of tacos and taco- like meals. Making mole in Oaxaca was a highlight. We've been on four Intrepid Food tours - and while we have liked them all, this was probably the best!
