Trip Informations
Say hola to an adventure in the heart of Mexico. From Aztec to Zapotec, this eight-day trip blends the best of the country’s highlights and lesser-known spots, with ancient ruins and natural wonders around every corner. With local experiences and plenty of free time, you can make the adventure your own. Wander through bustling markets, learn the secrets of black pottery and join an alebrijes workshop. Try pasita (raisin-flavoured liqueur) in a local bar in Puebla, explore the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Monte Alban and Teotihuacan and discover the vibrant art scene of Oaxaca with a local leader by your side.
Why you’ll love this trip
Wander the UNESCO World Heritage site of Teotihuacan and see the archaeological ruins that predate the Aztec Empire by more than 1000 years.
Visit a local black pottery studio and watch a demonstration of how this ‘pottery of the night’ is made, then join an alebrijes workshop and learn about the brightly coloured Mexican folk art sculptures of mythical creatures.
Tour the local markets of Oaxaca – follow your nose to find the Pasillo de las Carnes Asadas (grilled meats aisle), choose your favourites, then load it up with guacamole, salsa and fresh tortillas for a classic Oaxacan lunch.
Soak up a full free day in Oaxaca, exploring the city at your own pace. Maybe take a cooking class or venture into the countryside to see some local villages and mezcal distilleries.
See the ancient ruins of Monte Alban – a UNESCO World Heritage site that tells the story of the Olmec, Zapotec and Mixtec peoples.
Is this trip right for you?
Attempting to communicate in Spanish is an excellent way of showing you care when you’re mingling with the locals, so it’s a good idea to learn a few words and phrases before your trip.
Mexico City and Puebla sit at over 2000 m (6500 ft) above sea level. This means it can get quite cool compared to the warmer weather experienced in Oaxaca. Be prepared with layers, including a warm outer layer, and remember to stay hydrated.
While no special physical preparation is required for this trip, you can expect to do a lot of walking – sometimes on uneven terrain.
This trip visits places that are at high altitude, and as a result some people can suffer from altitude sickness, regardless of age or physical health. Please see the Medical and health information section of the Essential Trip Information for more details.

I thoroughly enjoyed the tour led by LaValerdi. The entire group was amazing as well. We had GREAT food :) Overall the accommodations were fine. The hotel in Puebla was nosy from street noise and it is recommended to have a good pair of noise cancelling earbuds. In Oaxaca Uber is not available, but Didi can be used to go to the airport from downtown.

The tour was phenomenal! We got what I feel were some of the best hotels in Mexico! The local cuisine was amazing, and the enthusiasm of our tour guide to increase our knowledge and understanding of her country and culture really added the cherry on top for this tour! She was always going out of her way with suggestions to ensure we knew where get good local food, drinks, where to explore, where to visit, and what to expect for good pricing and tipping! I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better experience. This was my second time leaving the country after a 10 year gap, but it was my first time with Intrepid. Because of how well our tour guide ran everything, I 100% want to use Intrepid for all my future travels! I will be recommending it to all my friends and family too!

Mexico/Puebla/Oaxaca trip was amazing! Our tour guide Viri was the heart of the group. Her energy and positive vibe throughout the tour was infectious. Our group was one of the best groups I've traveled with out of the 7 tours with Intrepid. Everyone was open to adventures. We laughed a lot. Everyone in the group are world travelers and it was so much fun and inspiring to hear of all the places that the group have been to as either solo travelers or going on tours. We shared a Christmas Eve Dinner that I will never forget. Food was excellent. Menu was like one you see in the movies! We got to meet the Chef. As a dual citizen of Mexico, walking around the temples we visited -Teotihuacan on the way to Puebla and Monte Albán in Oaxaca - gave me such a sense of pride. It was beautiful. Climbing up the steps to the temples was a little too much for me, but Viri made sure I didn't feel isolated from the rest of the group when they climbed the steps.

What an amazing way to experience Mexico! This was my second visit to the country and it was still a novel and amazing experience. Our tour leader, Viri was truly spectacular and I'd strongly recommend her to anyone seeking to sign up for this trip.

This trip was such a nice balance of planned activities and free time. We enjoyed exploring the three destination cities on our own, yet having activities here and there to join with the group and learn more about this fascinating section of Mexico!
