Trip Informations
Why you’ll love this trip
Wander market stalls, relax in public parks and sample the enticing Mexican eats of Mexico City, Puebla and Oaxaca.
Cruise up the Rio Dulce to your waterfront jungle lodge, surrounded by the serenesounds of the jungle. Then, explore Livingston – a one-of-a-kind riverside town where the local culture is heavily influenced by the Afro-Caribbean Garifuna population.
See some of the most significant remnants of the ancient Maya civilisation – plus an array of local wildlife, including coatis and howler monkeys – during a guided tour of Tikal National Park.
Swim in Cenote Azul, then soak up beach time in Bacalar, Playa del Carmen and the island paradise of Caye Caulker – tuck into barbecued lobster, snorkel around a coral reef, nap under palm trees or go kayaking.
End your trip in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed city of Antigua and consider staying on a couple of extra days to explore the colourful city at your own pace.
Is this trip right for you?
This trip involves some long days of travel by private and local transport. While this can be tiring, it's also a fantastic way to rub shoulders with the locals and get under the skin of a place. Crossing the borders between the various countries visited on this trip is usually straightforward, but you may need to be patient. Books, podcasts and car games will be your best friend.
Central America's climate is sultry and tropical, so can get really hot and humid. Wear loose clothing and make sure you stay hydrated, especially while out on walking tours. You can also expect to walk a lot and the terrain is rarely flat. Make sure to pack a jacket for the higher altitude cities like Mexico City, Puebla and Antigua.
Try to learn as many Spanish words as you can before the trip. In many of the destinations we visit, local people are reserved and/or do not speak English. Attempting to communicate in Spanish is a great way of showing you care.
Itinerary
Make the epic and scenic journey from buzzing Mexico City to gorgeous Guatemala
Over 27 epic days, this adventure will take you from Mexico City to Guatemala, stopping at all the popular spots and lesser-known secrets along the way. You’ll explore the heart of Mexico's Aztec, Zapotec, Maya and Spanish cultures, tasting pasita in Puebla, visiting the markets of Oaxaca and learning about the textile traditions of Teotitlan del Valle. Take guided tours in Chichen Itza (one of the Seven Wonders of the World) and Palenque, then relax beachside at Playa del Carmen. Amble down the coast to the island paradise of Caye Caulker, cut inland to the lush jungle around San Ignacio, cruise to the vast Rio Dulce, tour Tikal National Park, dance with the locals in Livingston, and finish under the volcano in Antigua.
