Trip Informations
Discover the origins and rituals of the Dia de los Muertos, or the annual Day of the Dead festival, on a five-day cultural exploration of Mexico City and its surrounds. Visit the museums of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera and learn about their fascination with death, wander about the Tlahuac community, participate in a traditional Day of the Dead ceremony and see elaborate altars dedicated to the deceased. Dive straight into the traditional ceremonies that have made this festival so infamous – and try plenty of Mexico City’s tacos, too (obviously).
Why you’ll love this trip
Veer off the tourist track for a more authentic Dia de los Muertos experience. Join a family in Tlahuac to create an ofrenda (altar), learn about their traditions and take part in their colourful cemetery ceremonies.
Soak up the electric atmosphere as Mexico City comes alive with vibrant altars, art, music and community traditions and rituals. Fiesta the night away and get into the true spirit of this haunting ceremonial festival.
Take a walking tour of Mexico City with your local leader, taking in the city’s most iconic sites – the Zocalo, Metropolitan Cathedral and Palacio de Bellas Artes.
Visit the Frida Kahlo Museum in the historic Coyoacan neighbourhood – you'll check out the works in her former home and discover how her art often focused on the notion of death.
Travel in a small group of no more than 12 travellers, allowing you to experience deeper cultural connections. With a local leader by your side, you’ll make meaningful memories with the locals throughout the festival.
Is this trip right for you?
The Day of the Dead Parade in Tlahuac is included in your itinerary! Additionally, Mexico City hosts its own parade between late October and early November, though exact dates are not set until a few days before the event. If the Mexico City parade coincides with your trip, we may need to rearrange some activities so everyone can attend this parade as well. While we can't make guarantees due to the parade's unpredictable scheduling, we're committed to helping you experience both magical celebrations if timing allows.
This itinerary is designed to provide the best possible experience of the annual Day of the Dead festivities around Mexico City. As such, there is very limited free time to explore many of the area’s most popular tourist attractions, including the Museum of Anthropology, Teotihuacan and Chapultepec Park. We recommend you stay a few extra days before or after the trip to make the most of this vibrant metropolis. If you would like to spend more time in Mexico City, we’ll be happy to book additional accommodation for you (subject to availability).
We will be operating multiple departures of this trip, so it’s possible that more than one group will be at some locations or activities at the same time. However, each group will have a maximum of 12 passengers with its own dedicated trip leader.
This trip visits places that are at high altitude, and as a result some people can suffer from altitude sickness, regardless of age or physical health. Please see the Medical and health information section of the Essential Trip Information for more details.
