Trip Informations
Dive into a 13-day adventure through Central America, from the calming sea breezes of Playa del Carmen's beaches to the magnificent Mayan ruins of Tikal. On this journey to Mexico, Guatemala and Belize, amble down the coast to the island paradise of Caye Caulker, cut inland to the lush jungle around San Ignacio, cruise to the vast Rio Dulce, watch a pottery demonstration using ancient Maya techniques and finish under the volcano in Antigua. On this trip, you’ll get the right balance of local-led experiences and independent exploration in a whole load of incredible places ready to be discovered.
Why you’ll love this trip
Spend three days exploring the island paradise of Caye Caulker – munch on barbecued lobster, snorkel around a coral reef, nap under palm trees, go kayaking or just kick back with a couple of worry-free beach days.
Dig deeper into Maya history, opting to visit lesser-known ruins and a mystical Maya cave complex around San Ignacio – a vibrant market town near the Belize-Guatemala border.
See some of the most significant remnants of the ancient Maya civilisation – plus an array of local wildlife, including coatis and howler monkeys – during a guided tour of Tikal National Park.
Cruise up the Rio Dulce to your waterfront jungle lodge, a serene escape where the sounds of nature fill the air.
Float along the river to Livingston, where the local culture is heavily influenced by the Afro-Caribbean Garifuna population. After a scenic boat ride, you’ll walk around the colourful town, watch the fishermen by the docks and join the locals for a dance class.
Is this trip right for you?
Public transport is better for the environment, and you’ll get an authentic look at daily life, but keep in mind that local transport between specific locations on this trip can be pretty basic. Crossing the borders between various countries is usually straightforward, but you may need patience. Books, podcasts and car games will be your best friend.
The tropical climate of Central America means conditions can be really hot and humid. It makes the beers even more refreshing but consider what time of the year you wish to travel in if you’re easily affected by the weather.

Great trip! Interesting activities. Excellent snorkeling at Caye Culker. Unique caving experience (ATM) at San Ignacio. Also loved the Green Iguana project. Comprehensive visit to Tikal archaeological site. Some long days on the road were well balanced with two night stays.

You cannot emerge from this whistle stop adventure down the Yucatan coast of Mexico into Belize and Guatemala without a strong sense of empathy for the ancient Mayans and their present day contemporaries. You marvel at the sacred burial sites at Actun Tunichil Muknal and the ancient ruins of Tikal. Swimming with the reef sharks off Caye Caulker was a first for me. Lovely leader and good solid crew of fellow travellers from England, Ireland, Australia and Brazil, a memorable trip.

By the end of this trip you will sure as hell know half a dozen ways that the Mayans sacrificed their human offerings to the Gods. You will have been spellbound by the marvels of the sacred caves Acton Tunichil Muknal, and the view from Temple 4 overlooking the canopy and ruins at Tikal. Down the Mexican Yucatan coast into Belize and Guatemala, this is a whistle stop adventure into the mysteries of Central America taking in swimming with the reef sharks off Caye Caulker and dancing on the beach in Livingston to the sound of the Marcial Percussion Band, unmissable and well run by the charming Cecilia.

Ceci, our wonderful guide ensured I had the trip of a lifetime. From snorkelling at Hoi Chan Reserve with turtles, to exploring the ATM cave in Belize, a two night stay at a jungle lodge in Rio Dulce and so much more in between. This trip kept on giving. I would highly recommend it to anyone considering visiting this part of the world.

The Mayan Intrepid tour was an excellent tour combining travel, with nature, culture and adventure. It's an excellent tour for getting a feel for Central/Latin America.

This trip takes you through three countries and in all of them, you have the chance to visit breathtaking Mayan sites (through optional activities + an included visit to Tikal). Belize exceeded all of our expectations and I highly recommend the optional snorkling activity at the Hol Chan Marine Reserve - an absolutely amazing experience. Big thanks to our tour leader Maria Jose (Majo) who did an amazing job guiding our group through the wonders of Central America.

I had reservations about travelling in a group, but actually it was a fantastic experience. Pre-arranged travel and accommodation, like-minded people, lots of included activities. The whole package was been better than expected. Our guide, Hugo, was incredibly knowledgeable, funny, organised, clealry loved his job and really made this trip special. Every day was the best day ever!

After a few days in Mexico to settle in and get to know each other, Belize completely exceeded our expectations. We loved the laid-back charm of Caye Caulker and were equally impressed by the incredible archaeological sites around San Ignacio, a fascinating mix of history and nature. Exploring Tikal and the unique Caribbean vibes of Livingston made the journey even more special. A huge thank you to our tour leader Majo, who was incredibly approachable and knowledgeable throughout the trip. She made everything seamless while sharing so much insight along the way. Highly recommended!
