Trip Informations
Climb aboard one of South East Asia’s most historic rail journeys on this 10-day adventure from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore. Rolling past forests, rural villages, palm trees and fields, you’ll experience the beauty and cultural heritage of the less-travelled reaches of Malaysia. Kick off in vibrant Kuala Lumpur, then head to Ipoh to stand beneath a giant Buddha statue in Perak Cave Temple and uncover the stories of Old Town. Swap the trees for coral reefs on a snorkelling trip to the Perhentian Islands, then get back on track to Taman Negara to learn jungle survival skills with Orang Asli tribes. After uncovering Melaka’s rich history by trishaw, wrap it all up with satay and char kway teow in Singapore’s hawker halls.
Why you’ll love this trip
verified
Embrace a slower pace of travel on Malaysia's 100-year-old ‘Jungle Railway’ (Peninsular Malaysia’s East Coast Line). Chug through the ever-changing landscape, ride alongside locals and watch village life unfold along the way.
verified
Take a river cruise through Taman Negara’s rainforest and meet the Orang Asli, one of Peninsular Malaysia’s last Indigenous groups. Discover their ancient forest survival skills, from traditional hunting techniques to the secrets of living in harmony with the jungle.
verified
Visit two UNESCO-recognised cities. Uncover the history and creativity of Ipoh’s Old Town as you explore murals, old buildings and narrow alleys lined with antique shops, then dive into Melaka’s spice trading past as you zip through its heritage streets on a trishaw.
verified
Daytrip to the tropical Perhentian Islands for a snorkelling adventure. Swim in crystalline waters, explore colourful reefs and snorkel among curious clownfish, parrotfish, rays and maybe even turtles.
verified
Eat your way around Lau Pa Sat – one of Singapore’s oldest and most celebrated hawker markets, set against a skyline of shiny high rises.

On sections of this trip, you'll ride on Peninsular Malaysia's East Coast Line, historically known as the Malaysia Jungle Railway. This is a commuter train for the locals and was once the lifeline for the locals on the east coast when it was built more than 100 years ago by the British. The railway cuts through the dense jungle, therefore it's commonly known as the 'Jungle Railway'. You'll get a glimpse of local daily life and travel like a local yourself in this lesser-visited part of Malaysia, but the jungle scenery has been changed and shaped by how local life has evolved over the last 100 years, with forests making way to plantations and tribal settlements turning into villages and towns.

This trip involves some long travel days and early starts, using a mix of trains and buses to get around. Trains are comfortable and often include air-conditioning and toilets.

This trip doesn't spend much time in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, two of the most vibrant capitals in South Eastern Asia. We highly recommend you spend more time in both cities. Please speak to your booking agent if you are interested in booking additoinal accommodation in either city.

A great compilation of the highlights of the Malaysian Peninsula from the cities, to the islands, to the rainforests - there is something for everyone, all seen from the unique perspective of the railway through the countryside.

I really enjoyed this tour. There were some very early starts and a few long days travelling, but the experience of snorkeling in the Perhentians and visiting the jungle made it worth it.

This trip was excellent. Saw parts of Malaysia that we would not have ventured to if travelling on our own. Accomodation was well positioned (especially in KL and Singapore) and always very clean. We always ate with the group at small locally owned and operated restaurants recommended by our guide. The food was always very good. Be prepared for some long travel days and little free time.

Foodies would love this tour. Malaysian cuisine, locally sourced and prepared. Timely and coordinated travel. The jungle is a magical has a restorative calmness. Malays are happy, polite and welcoming people. Intrepid always employs great guides, and Beatrice is a stand out. Her organisational and adaptability skills were exceptional. She is a proud Malay and we benefited from her leadership and knowledge. She is the best guide I’ve had.

The Malaysian Jungle Railway trip was full of adventure and new experiences. The excellent team leader ensured each person in the group was well cared for. The food along the way was an adventure in itself. I would do it all again!

Excellent trip. Be prepared for some very early starts and a few long travel days but they are necessary to cover the length and breadth of the mainland. Beautiful sights and interesting activities included.
