Trip Informations
Why you’ll love this trip
Discover ancient ruins in Athens, including the Acropolis – a UNESCO World Heritage site of an ancient citadel with the iconic Parthenon temple, dedicated to the goddess Athena.
Visit the home of the Oracle of Delphi in the Sanctuary of Apollo. Take a guided tour through the archeological sites, see numerous monuments, temples and the reconstructed Athenian Treasury and learn about the myths and stories of the region.
Climb the stairs to the top of Meteora and discover the UNESCO World Heritage-listed 14th-century monasteries are perched on a series of ancient rock pinnacles.
Indulge in the many flavours of Greek cuisine like moussaka (layered eggplant or potato, meat and a creamy sauce) or grilled lamb and tzatziki during dinner at a traditional taverna as Rembetika music floats around you.
See some of the best sites Greece with curated activities and plenty of free time. Maybe visit the Panathinaiko Stadium that housed the first Olympic games in Athens or walk along the waterfront to the White Tower in Thessaloniki.
Is this trip right for you?
Summer temperatures can be extreme in Greece (over 40°C), which can be uncomfortable. It’s important to use sun protection, wear layers to combat the heat and drink plenty of water. Please carefully consider the time of the year you wish to travel and your suitability for that season.
Hotels in Europe often don't have double beds, but rather two single beds that can be pushed together.
On this trip you must pack as lightly as possible because you will be expected to carry your own bag at some points. While you won’t be required to walk long distances with your luggage (max 30 minutes), we strongly recommend keeping the weight under 15 kg. Most travellers carry their luggage in a backpack, although an overnight bag with a shoulder strap would suffice if you travel lightly. Smaller bags or backpacks with wheels are convenient, although we recommend your bag has carry straps to accommodate the cobbled streets, uneven surfaces, stairs and steps you are likely to encounter while carrying your luggage. You'll also need a day bag to carry water and a camera etc for daytrips.
If you have more time to explore the region, you may like to check out our trip ‘Best of Greece’ (trip code ZMSAC). This trip explores the beautiful Cycladic Islands in addition to the Greek mainland. Most departure dates are designed to create this perfect combination trip.

This trip was great! We not only got to see the historical sites but it gave us a good chance to experience the Greek way of life. Our leader, Dina, was 1st class! Not only does she do her job well, she also takes the time to know her guests & to build a great rapport with them. I’d recommend this trip to anyone wanting an introduction to this beautiful country & its way of life.

This was the trip of a lifetime. From waking up the first morning in Athens to the view of the Acropolis, to learning the history of Thessaloniki, walking the monasteries with gorgeous views, and winding down in Delphi with an olive tasting and pool overlooking the valley, this trip had a bit of everything for everyone. I highly recommend this trip.

Booking with Intrepid far exceeded my expectations! We made friends, learned through exploration and felt empowered in our own skills! They took the scary aspect of traveling alone out of the equation. We were never lost in a big crowd even though we went through some of the highest traveled tourist locations. Our tour was personable and accommodating while getting the most out of every opportunity in new cities, food choices, even inter/intrapersonal opportunities. Safety and environment were meticulously cared for.

This tour highlighted that mainland Greece has more to offer than just the Acropolis. Loved learning about the other cool things that can be found in Thessaloniki, Kalambaka, and Delphi. The tour is well-paced and well-balanced. Add an extra day or two to explore Athens, and bring small Euro bills!

My partner and I had a wonderful tour of mainland Greece due to our exceptional tour leader, Dina. Dina was warm, caring, enthusiastic and has a great knowledge of the history and places to see in the areas we visited. She helped us when Greek needed to be spoken and was always liaising with others on our behalf. We loved the benefits of having a local guide to get the best out of the experience, something we couldn't have done on our own. Thanks so much Dina for everything you did.

The tour of mainland Greece is a must for first time visitors. Visiting monasteries in Meteoroa, the ancient ruins of Delphi and the Acropolis, all with excellent guides, were fantastic. Our tour leader Dina’s enthusiasm was matched by her depth of knowledge of local history and contemporary culture. Her restaurant recommendations were also excellent. A great value for money tour.
