Why you’ll love this trip
Witness a spectacular pink and yellow sunset behind towering, 800-year-old trees along the Avenue of the Baobabs in the laid-back seaside town of Morondava.
Travel along the Tsiribihina River in a traditional barge, stopping to hike to hidden waterfalls, explore remote villages and camp among nature on the banks.
Trek through a forest of limestone karsts and cross a sheer drop on a suspended bridge at the Great Tsingy, keeping an eye out for native wildlife including 11 species of lemur.
Support a noble cause while exploring Anja Community Reserve and the Mitsinjo Forest – these reserves are not just sanctuaries for wildlife but also beacons of community empowerment and conservation.
Take a hands-on chocolate-making class and learn the secrets that make Malagasy chocolate unique and delicious. Then, sample your creations with pastries, tea, coffee and rum!
Is this trip right for you?
A good level of fitness is required for this trip. With treks, camping, and long journeys, it is a challenging trip, so we recommend being in good physical condition to get the most out of your experience.
There are two nights of river camping on this tour. There are no bathroom facilities, and it will not be possible to shower for three days, though water is available for washing.
Road conditions in Madagascar are notoriously very poor and unmaintained. Due to government inaction and yearly monsoons, conditions can be terrible and a level of patience is required. Most of the driving days on this trip will be long and bumpy.
Some accommodation inside the national parks is basic and may not have the creature comforts of hotels in bigger towns and cities. Be prepared for no wifi or air conditioning, but also for charming, tucked-away locations you won’t quite believe are real.
The visible vertical drop at the Big Tsingy can be quite intimidating, especially for those with vertigo.

I thoroughly enjoyed this trip and would highly recommend it to open-minded travellers. The roads can be challenging and some travel days are long, as the itinerary outlines, but this only added to the adventure—allowing us to learn more and experience the real Madagascar. The people are incredibly friendly and resourceful, and every guide we had was excellent. I was initially apprehensive about visiting the Tsingy due to my fear of heights, but I’m so glad I pushed through and accomplished it. Madagascar is a truly fascinating country, and this itinerary offered a wonderfully varied glimpse into its diversity.

intrepid Madagascar trip blew me away. There is so much to enjoy way being just boabs and lemurs- fascinating national parks, lots of potential for exercise, and most of all a very enriching cultural experience. This country is very poor, and the local communities are very cohesive, so I felt like this trip not only enriched me, but also the Malagasy people

I can’t extol the virtues of this Intrepid) Travel tour sufficiently well. The wildlife was prolific & diverse, the scenery varied & often sublime; the local culture fascinating. The only difficult aspect of the travel being the long bus journeys over very poorly maintained roads.

"Madagascar in Depth" For my outdoor people. You need to put this tour on you list. The first of this trip is a beautiful boat trip down the Tsiribihina River with camping on the shore line. Here will stop along villages where the local children are thrilled to take a photo with you just so they can see it on your cell phone. My favorite part the trip. Then you will be challenged on the Tsingy hike with lots of rock scrambling for six hours. Tough but worth it and I am 70. The second part of the trip deals with National parks and lots of Lemur sightings. The bad part is the ROADs. The first day is a 14 hour drive on some of the worst roads in the world. You need to be adventurer for this trip but you WILL be rewarded with fantastic experiences daily.

This trip was an incredible experience, well-tailored to anyone who enjoys nature and being active. There were long travel days, but it did not spoil the fun and pleasure. The trip was varied as it included hikes, nature, animals and culture. I especially enjoyed the boat trip and the visits to the National Parks. Travelling in Madagascar can be challenging, but our tour leader Patrick made sure that I got the most out of this trip.

Madagascar is an incredible place that paradoxically feels like it’s both changing rapidly and not at all. I am so grateful that I got to experience traveling here, and I’m glad I chose to do it with Intrepid. I think Madagascar is a tricky place to do your own logistics (like I usually do), Intrepid will take good care of you. If you can, do the 24 days!! You’ll get a much better sense of the country and its many landscapes and cultures. And… embrace the reality of the terrible long roads ;) It will give you insight into the real lives of Madagascans.

Madagascar in Depth is the BEST way to experience the best of this unique island. Travel conditions are rough, but the payoff is amazing wildlife viewing, unique natural resources, and a vibrant country.

It’s a given that the roads are bad and travel times are long - if you can’t cope with this maybe you should look for another tour; however this tour is fantastic - you get to see everything from lemurs to the Tsingy, chaotic market places to rainforests, beaches, and long slow boat trips. If you’ve always wanted to go to Madagascar, just do it, it’s fantastic - you won’t regret it.

Amazing trip mixing boat cruise and camping, Hiking in Nation Park, spotting Wildlife, eating malagasy gastronomy, meeting incredibly nice people along the journey. I will do it again without a hesitation! I just loved it!
