Trip Informations
Why you’ll love this trip
Witness a spectacular pink and yellow sunset behind towering, 800-year-old trees along the Avenue of the Baobabs in the laid-back seaside town of Morondava.
Travel along the Tsiribihina River in a traditional barge, stopping to hike to hidden waterfalls, explore remote villages and camp among nature on the banks.
Trek through a forest of limestone karsts and cross a sheer drop on a suspended bridge at the Great Tsingy, keeping an eye out for native wildlife including 11 species of lemur.
Float down the meandering Manambolo River in a traditional dugout canoe, wind through a deep gorge and past rocky cliffs, soaking up the tranquil atmosphere.
Discover the emerald-green waters of Tritiva, an extinct crater surrounded by verdant forest, on a hike through the stunning Antsirabe district.
Is this trip right for you?
The visible vertical drop at the Great Tsingy is an incredible sight, however it can be quite intimidating especially for those with vertigo. If you have concerns, please discuss these with your leader once the trip commences.
Some of the best scenery in Madagascar is found on hikes. So, while this trip doesn't require a high level of fitness, it’s essential to be at least moderately fit if you want to partake in all activities.
This trip includes river cruising on the Tsiribihina River. Camping conditions are basic along the way and there will be no access to bathroom facilities, however this means you have access to more remote parts of the region and the joy of experiencing the elements.
As this is a remote part of Madagascar there will be some very long travel days, but we think the unique and rewarding experiences are worth the distances travelled. Due to the conditions of the roads and the impact of little maintenance during the pandemic travel can be slow so a little patience can go a long way.
Itinerary
Discover the diverse landscapes of Africa’s remote eco-paradise.
Venture into the far reaches of Madagascar on this 11-day journey that reveals the diverse landscapes of one of the most spellbinding countries on the African continent. From the emerald-green crater lakes of the Antsirabe district, to the golden hues of sunset in the Avenue of the Baobabs, experience Madagascar’s rainbow terrain as you leave behind the bustle of Antananarivo and traverse remote paths and waterways into the wild. Experience life along the Tsiribihina Delta on a two-day cruise, see the legendary tombs of the Vazimba people while exploring caves, float down the Manambolo River in a dugout canoe and feel the suspense as you peer down into the vast canyon of the Great Tsingy.

Despite the long drives, and bumpy roads, you get to see and do some pretty amazing things. Of course this is true for any tour of Madagascar, but hopefully you get a great guide like Bruno to be the difference, making it even better.

I really enjoyed this tour, with the highlights absolutely being the Tsingy's and Avenue of Baobabs. There are some very long travel days, making this a bit of a destination tour, with limited daily activities, with some notable exceptions such as the volcanic lake and some village walks. Personally I really appreciated being able to see parts of Madagascar that I wouldn't otherwise easily had access to. If its wildlife you are after then this isn't the tour for you. But if some amazing landscapes and seeing a large area of Madagascar appeals, then I would recommend. Bruno was a fantastic guide and helped make the tour really enjoyable.

Amazing trip that was very well organised and provided a great insight into this part of Madagascar, a beautiful and fantastic country. Our tour leader Salohy was incredible. Highly recommend!

This was an excellent itinerary in spite of all of the driving (which there is a lot of). Our guide, Mamy, really made our trip comfortable and safe as he shared information about the history of Madagascar and some of his personal experiences which really enhanced my experience. Our accommodations were clean and safe. The river camping was fun and comfortable (did not need sleeping bags as very warm blankets were provided). The hike in the Tsingy was incredibly challenging but highly recommended. There is a lot of driving but there is no way around this really - just go along for the ride and you will be fine. I would recommend this tour as a way to see Madagascar.

Ready for adventure? This was an awesome trip, led by an awesome guide! It's not for everyone. Get ready for long days without proper toilets or running water, but if you are OK with that, you won't regret it. Visiting Madagascar was a mind-blowing experience I will never forget. From climbing in the Tsingy, to lemur watching, to meeting the locals and seeing how they live, this trip has it all.

This is quite a full-on trip with a lot of travelling. But it was worth it, I really enjoyed it.
