Is this trip right for you?
verified
A good level of fitness is required for this trip. With treks, camping, and long journeys, it is a challenging trip, so we recommend being in good physical condition to get the most out of your experience.
verified
There are two nights of river camping on this tour. There are no bathroom facilities, and it will not be possible to shower for three days, though water is available for washing.
verified
Road conditions in Madagascar are notoriously very poor and unmaintained. Due to government inaction and yearly monsoons, conditions can be terrible, and a level of patience is required. Most of the driving days on this trip will be long and bumpy.
verified
Some accommodation inside the national parks is basic and may not have the creature comforts of hotels in bigger towns and cities. Be prepared for no wifi or air conditioning, but also for charming, tucked-away locations you won’t quite believe are real.
verified
The visible vertical drop at the Big Tsingy can be quite intimidating, especially for those with vertigo.
verified
This trip can be paired with other adventures in Madagascar, which means some of your fellow travellers may carry on to further destinations at the end of this tour. If you’d like to spend more time in Madagascar, have a look at our combo tour, Madagascar in Depth (YBSCC).

This trip was spectacular from start to finish! Our incredibly knowledgeable and professional guide, Patrick, ensured our journey was smooth and full of learning opportunities. Some of the highlights of the trip for me were: the relaxing river cruise (no swimming except at the waterfall stop!), camping under the Milky Way (bring a sleeping bag/thermal sheet if you get cold at night), trekking through the Tsingys, watching white lemurs dance in the trees above us, and of course walking through the Avenue of the Baobabs (and the opportunity to plant one!). If you are taking this your, I would recommend you exchange your money at the airport (eg $150-$250 USD per person) as the Madagascan economy is primarily cash based and there aren’t many ATMs along the route we took. This will cover food, some drinks, some souvenirs, and tips for porters/drivers/local guides/cleaning staff. It really has been a trip of a lifetime and I feel so blessed to have had this opportunity to explore the beauty of Madagascar!

I would highly recommend this trip to anyone looking to explore the beautiful and unique island of Madagascar! Our guide Patrick was extremely knowledgeable/professional, and helped make the trip an unforgettable experience. Be prepared for many long travel days on terrible road conditions, but know that the adventure you'll have along the way will all be worth it.
NOTE - there is very limited access to ATMs or money exchanges once you leave the airport, so be sure to take out enough money for the entire trip immediately upon landing. For our trip this was equivalent to approximately 200 USD per person and covered all additional meals, occasional drinks, and tipping for local guides/drivers/porters at each hotel

Madagascar is an amazing destination. Be prepared for hard travel on unmade roads but the destinations and wildlife make it more than worth it. Go, before too much Western influence changes its character.

A varied trip with lazy days on a river cruise mixed with climbing in the Tsingy and wonderful sights. Highlights included seeing Lemurs, the Baobabs at sunset and the Big Tsingy.

Our first Intrepid trip was to Madagascar in 2025. We loved the Itinerary which was inclusive and detailed. The trip was expertly managed and we loved our eclectic group of adventurers. Our guide Mamy had such a wealth of knowledge about the area, and looked after each of our individual needs in his stride. He was amazing!

I thoroughly enjoyed this tour & learnt alot about Madagascar & Malagasy culture. All the included activities, especially the boat ride along the Tsiribihina River, exceeded my expectations (note: bring your swimmers for the waterfall). The scenery & people were so varied. We only saw a few lemur species so if you want to see more consider continuing the tour to the south or east to Analamazotra National Park. Be prepared for some long travel days on terrible roads & 4x4 tracks. Intrepid provided good vehicles & excellent drivers to navigate the road conditions.

Despite the long drives, and bumpy roads, you get to see and do some pretty amazing things. Of course this is true for any tour of Madagascar, but hopefully you get a great guide like Bruno to be the difference, making it even better.

I really enjoyed this tour, with the highlights absolutely being the Tsingy's and Avenue of Baobabs. There are some very long travel days, making this a bit of a destination tour, with limited daily activities, with some notable exceptions such as the volcanic lake and some village walks. Personally I really appreciated being able to see parts of Madagascar that I wouldn't otherwise easily had access to. If its wildlife you are after then this isn't the tour for you. But if some amazing landscapes and seeing a large area of Madagascar appeals, then I would recommend. Bruno was a fantastic guide and helped make the tour really enjoyable.
