Why you’ll love this trip
Size up Mt Kilimanjaro on the incredible scenic Machame route, passing through cloud forest and moorland zones to the glaciated precipices of Kibo’s south face.
Travel with experienced guides and porters. You'll be in great hands – with one guide for every two passengers – so all you’ll have to worry about is soaking up the scenery and keeping your footing!
Soak up Kilimanjaro’s changing scenery – magnificent rainforests and high-alpine deserts to ice fields and vast glaciers – this is all on display as you tackle the trails to the top of Africa.
Catch a dazzling African sunrise from Stella Point on your way to summit Africa's highest mountain peak – definitely a rewarding experience after an early wake-up call!
Feel good knowing that you’re supporting an official partner of IMEC’s Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP). This means that all our climbs have been assessed and scored based on a number of criteria, all of which are designed to ensure the proper treatment of porters.
Is this trip right for you?
A good level of fitness is required to join this trip. While the distances covered are not far, the effects of altitude will make it much harder than the usual uphill hike.
To allow for your body to adjust to the altitude the going will be slow. The speed of the hiking may be much slower than you are use too. However, we have found that this slow speed allows your body’s reserve levels to remain higher plus also allows for your body to adjust to the altitude as you walk.
Tried and tested all-purpose hiking equipment is required. Night-time temperatures can get very cold above 3500 m so warm clothing and sleeping bag is essential. Hiring of equipment/sleeping bag is also possible.
Your safety comes first. All our guides and trek leaders have been trained by independent, UK-based medical specialists and are proficient in first aid. They also carry oxygen cylinders on all treks for emergency use.
Be prepared for dusty and therefore dirty conditions. It can be tough going hiking for continuous days without a shower. A dust mask, wet wipes and face washer may become your best friends.
Some passengers will have been travelling together prior to the start of this trip. You may also want to check out our The Safari to Kilimanjaro - Machame Route trip if you have more time to explore East Africa.

I reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. I could NOT have done that without the help of the ENTIRE Intrepid team. The leaders were fantastic and very attentive. The cooks worked magic on the trip, and we ate like royalty. The porters were phenomenal and had everything packed up and installed at the new campsite before we even knew what happened. I loved the trip and the entire Intrepid crew. I'm eager to discover a new destination! OH -- and all the backend stuff was great as well. Their online chat team was extremely helpful in getting last-minute details organized. Thanks, Intrepid!!!

If you've ever considered climbing Kili, Machame Route won't disappoint. Erick and the crew were phenomenal. If you can believe you can be pampered, believe me, you do not want for a thing

Excellent organized trip with a top guide, Erick. Intrepid could consider of adding one more day for acclimatization purposes, but other than that the trip was excellent and everyone made it to the top.

Hardest and most rewarding trek I have ever done. What an incredible experience to hike to the summit under the stars and be greeted by a sunrise. Definitely the most challenging route but beautiful every step of the way

I would highly recommend Intrepid’s tours, based on my experience on the Machame Route on Kilimanjaro. The team I went with were extremely supportive and professional, with a strong focus on our health and safety, and environmental sustainability. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to not only participate in this tour, but to summit Kilimanjaro against the odds! AJ, Angela, Yohana, Vendi, Rocky and the rest of the amazing, highly professional crew made this a trip of a lifetime! I will definitely be booking with Intrepid again! Our safety and comfort on the mountain were the team's first priority. They made sure everyone was safe and looked after. You can be sure the Intrepid team will do their best to get you to the summit and back as safely as possible.

Cannot recommend the Intrepid team and the Machame route highly enough! It is a tough trek and the views and the changing terrains are incredible but what made this such a once in a lifetime opportunity was the team of 33 that quite literally carried us up the mountain on their shoulders :)

What a fantastic trip completing the 6 day Machame route to the top of Kilimanjaro! I can’t fault it, we were incredibly well looked after by Joshua and the whole team and I am very grateful for the experience.

This trip is not for the faint-hearted; you’ll like attempt to climb the summit when highly sleep- and food deprived, with a touch of altitude sickness. It’s amazing but research properly before you book!!
