Trip Informations
Take your tastebuds on an 11-day culinary journey through Japan’s most delicious hotspots, relishing the flavours of ‘the Land of the Rising Sun’. Uncover the secrets of sushi in Tokyo, pick local produce with an expert in Kanazawa, feast on plant-based monastic cuisine in Koya-san, meet local farmers in Uji and go on a food crawl in Osaka. Take part in cooking classes, cooking demonstrations and market visits, feasting on local delights along the way. From temples to tempura, shrines to sashimi, seafood markets to sake breweries, you’ll join a local leader on a food-focused adventure that has all the best Japanese ingredients.
Why you’ll love this trip
Learn the tricks of the trade when you take part in a hands-on sushi-making class in Tokyo, pick local produce from the market for a cooking class in Kanazawa and make your own okonomiyaki in Osaka.
Meet local farmers during a daytrip from Kyoto to the Uji region – the home of green tea production. Tour the green tea and matcha farms, enjoy a hot cuppa, then walk the streets of Uji city, stopping on the way to see the Ujigami Shrine.
Wander the streets of Tokyo, stroll through Kenroku-en garden in Kanazawa, see the glowing signs of Osaka’s Dotonbori district, learn Buddhist history in Koya-san and walk through Gion – Kyoto’s geiko (geisha) district.
Feast on delicious Japanese cuisine, from street food to restaurant favourites including ekiben, sushi, matcha, takoyaki, okonomiyaki and fresh sashimi.
Sip on sake, Japan’s national drink, during a visit to a local sake brewery in Kyoto. Learn how sake is made and maybe even pick up a bottle (or two) to take home.
Is this trip right for you?
Japan’s cuisine includes a lot of meat and seafood. For vegetarians and vegans, we recommend reviewing the itinerary and inclusions to ensure that you will be able to fully participate and enjoy this trip. We also have many other trips to Japan which can accommodate a range of dietary requirements.
Japan is best explored on foot and by public transport. You’ll need to be fit enough to spend most of each day on your feet and able to handle your luggage as you navigate busy train stations. We recommend comfortable shoes and packing light.
During the monastery stay in Koya-san, you'll get to experience traditional Japanese accommodation. It’s a great cultural experience, but not everyone finds futon mattresses on tatami mat floors, tiny bathrooms and proximity to other guests as comfortable as Western-style hotels and beds. Read more in the ‘Accommodation’ section of the Essential Trip Information.
Double rooms in Japanese hotels can be smaller than you may be used to (for example, 20 sq m). Every effort will be made to accommodate double room requests. However, during busy periods, there may be occasions when we are unable to offer a double room, so a twin room will be provided.

This was my seventh Intrepid trip and fifth food tour, and Japan absolutely did not disappoint. Dai was an exceptional tour leader—helpful, knowledgeable, and always ready to answer any question we had or being proactive to all our needs. The food, of course, was incredible everywhere we went. I was super lucky on this trip I didn't have to share with anyone, as this is the only trip I have been on where single supplement was not an option. If I had to mention one downside, it’s simply that the trip wasn’t long enough! Our 10 days went too fast, but with so much to see in Japan, a couple of extra days and an additional destination or cooking class would have made it even better. This journey stands out as one of my most memorable Intrepid experiences—not only because of the amazing places and food, but because of Dai. Thanks to him, I think I can confidently say for everyone that he made it so much better.

The Foodie Tour of Japan was excellent. Our guide Daisuke Okawa was incredible. He is a very kind and thoughtful person. His English was excellent and he had taken the time to research absolutely everything that we might possibly be interested in exploring further and to be able to answer our many curly questions. His coordination and navigation skills to keep us all together and organised on the trains and buses in Japan was nothing short of miraculous! He calmly anticipated our every need and went over and above each day to ensure we were having the best experience ever. And so we did! Thank you Intrepid. Can’t wait for our next adventure together.

Absolutely fantastic trip. Our tour guide, Stacey, was the best! Beautiful personality, knowledgeable and a safe driver. We were very lucky with the weather, which was an added bonus. Every day was filled with exciting walks, hikes and visits to beautiful spots throughout Tasmania. I would recommend this trip to anyone!

An excellent introduction to Japan and its culture and food. Varied and interesting with sufficient personal time. As a newcomer to Japan it also helped me understand the public transport, which was invaluable for onward travel. The leader was knowledgeable and fun. We had a great holiday.
