Japan is best explored on foot and by public transport. You’ll need to be fit enough to spend most of each day on your feet and able to handle your luggage as you navigate busy train stations. We recommend comfortable shoes and packing light.

On this trip, you'll get to experience the traditional minshuku (Japanese-style inn) and homestay. These are great chances for a taste of tradition and authentic local life, but you'll be sleeping on futon mattresses on the tatami floor and the facilities will be shared on the property. Read more about it in the Accommodation section of the Essential Trip Information. For some departures, we may swap them with hotels depending on seasonal availability. Please consult your booking agent if you need more details.

This trip is a great way to see a lot in a short period of time and it can be part of a longer itinerary if you have more time to explore. You might like to check out Ultimate Japan.

Double rooms in Japanese hotels can be smaller than you may be used to (e.g. 20 sqm). Every effort will be made to accommodate double room requests. However, during busy periods, there may be occasions when we are unable to offer a double room, so a twin room will be provided.

Japan is a very safe and easy country to visit, the food is great, you can drink the water and everything is spotlessly clean. They have an unbelievable transport system, no long bus travel, bullet trains to everywhere at 270kph. This trip was fairly fast pace with a lot of walking days. Toshi our guide gave us a good insight into how the Japanese live and work today and in the past. The autumn display was beautiful especially at night. Very cold in the mountains, pack some winter woolies. A fun trip.

Land of the Rising Sun trip was beautiful in Autumn. The foliage was divine, gorgeous colours which provided a perfect backdrop for walking to pretty lakes and shrines and temples. I’m disappointed to see that Nikko is no longer on next year’s trip. It was one of my favourite places. We had a good balance of countryside and big cities. The food was delicious, transport very efficient and our guide Toshi did his very best to suggest walks, places of interest and eateries and accompanied us on activity free days. He frequently went above and beyond to help us, always with enthusiasm. He was amazing !

The Intrepid tour of Japan was outstanding. In particular, our Tour Guide, who was so knowledgeable, thoughtful, organised and humorous. He importantly took us to some great restaurants too. The itinerary was busy, but so comprehensive. It provided a wonderful variety of experiences in this beautiful country, ensuring I came away with wonderful memories.

A good insight into Japan, the culture and history. Public transport is well organised and a responsible way to travel. Good selection of locations visited and sights seen. A fair bit of walking means you need a reasonable level of fitness. Pack light, there are sufficient opportunities to do your own laundry in the provided accomodation.

The trip was a very good introduction to Japan, the culture and history. Travelling by bullet train, train, bus and tram was an interesting and good way to get around Japan. The public transport is well organised. Our tour guide was absolutely fantastic. This tour involves a fair bit of walking and should be ok for people with a reasonable level of fitness and you need to pack lightly. We found good opportunities to do our own laundry at the accomodation provided.
