Is this trip right for you?

Japan is best explored on foot and by public transport. You’ll need to be fit enough to spend most of each day on your feet and able to handle your luggage as you navigate busy train stations. We recommend comfortable shoes and packing light.

In some destinations, you may be staying in a minshuku, a Japanese-style inn. It’s a great taste of tradition; however, not everyone finds futon mattresses on the tatami floor, tiny bathrooms and proximity to other guests as comfortable as more Western-style hotels and beds. Read more about it in the Accommodation section of the Essential Trip Information. For some departures, we may swap them with hotels or vice versa depending on seasonal availability. Please consult your booking agent if you need more details.

This trip is a great way to see a lot in a short period of time and it can be part of a longer itinerary if you have more time to explore. You might like to check out Ultimate Japan.

Double rooms in Japanese hotels can be smaller than you may be used to (e.g. 20 sqm). Every effort will be made to accommodate double room requests. However, during busy periods, there may be occasions when we are unable to offer a double room, so a twin room will be provided.

I did the rising sun tour and not only was the guide (Zac Bell) fantastic but the locations and the food were terrific, would definitely do again.

Wonderful trip - great itinerary - loved getting to the smaller cities and all of the onsen opportunities, caught fall colors in Kyoto, and couldn’t have asked for a better leader than Shizuka

This tour was a fantastic introduction to Japan. There’s no way my family and I could have covered so much in 13 days without Intrepid! Our guide Toshi was outstanding. He had an amazing knowledge of Japan’s culture and history, and nothing was too much trouble for him!

Land of the Rising Sun with Yuka was a great experience. She is a highly organised, helpful and approachable guide. Also have to mention dear 75 year old Mr Kenzo, our local guide at Himeji Castle. The itinerary was interesting and varied. Highly recommended.

I had a great time, the number of participants being limited allowed more interaction with our guide and others in the party. Seeing buildings and settlements hundreds of years old gave me a feel of what life was like before industrlisation and after. Also, meeting people in smaller places was a great experience.

Intrepid "Land of the Rising Sun" tour was OUTSTANDING ! As a 77 year old man travelling with his wife of a similar age who were both fit enough to walk quite a lot it was a great choice of tour. It covered many locations and gave us a real insite into the culture, history and scenery of the parts of Japan we visited. Excellent English speaking guide who travelled with us for the whole trip.

We, in our mid 70’s, travelled to Japan with Intrepid Travel and were very satisfied with the organisation, the itinerary and the Guide was amazing travelling with us all the way.

The Land of the Rising Trip was a fantastic trip. I didn't know anyone in the group before I arrived but everyone was really friendly and we all got on so well. It was wonderful to meet people from all over the world. I saw so much of Japan during the trip, more so than if I had booked it on my own. It is a very active trip though so do pack light and prepare to move quickly at times between locations.
