Trip Informations
Why you’ll love this trip
verified
Experience two of the main religions in Japan – Buddhism and Shintoism – by following the footsteps of ancient pilgrims on their quest for faith along the Koya-san and Kumano Kodo trails.
verified
Discover two of the major cultural hubs of Japan on foot, walking the Philosopher’s Path in Kyoto and strolling through the Dotombori district in Osaka.
verified
Join in the morning prayers and share a traditional shojin ryori (Buddhist vegetarian) meal during an overnight temple stay in Koya-san, deep in mountainous Wakayama prefecture.
verified
Soak in an onsen after a day of trekking in Yunomine – there's no better way in Japan to relax and rejuvenate than in the natural mineral waters of a hot spring.
verified

Is this trip right for you?
verified
The active nature of this trip means that the fitter you are, the more you will be able to enjoy it. It is expected that travellers joining this trip will have had some experience hiking before joining this tour. On some hikes you will need to be able to carry your overnight pack on the trail because we will forward your luggage to the next destination. Hiking distances vary from 3 to 15km per day with no more elevation change than 60 to 900 m on one hike.
verified
The hikes on the Koya-san trail and Kumano Kodo include sections rather than the whole trail, which gives you an experience of the trails without needing to commit to multiple days of strenuous trekking.
verified
When we aren't hiking on this trip, we primarily use public transport, which is efficient and convenient in Japan. Please pack light and compact as you will be expected to transport your luggage between train stations and to hotels, which can include going up and down multiple flights of stairs in crowded areas.
verified
In some destinations, you may be staying in a ryokan, which is a Japanese-style inn. It's a great taste of tradition; however, not everyone finds futon mattresses on the tatami floor, tiny bathrooms and proximity to other guests as comfortable as more Western-style hotels. Read more about ryokans here: https://www.tuuur.com/adventures/traditional-japanese-ryokan/ https://www.tuuur.com/adventures/traditional-japanese-ryokan/ (https://www.tuuur.com/adventures/traditional-japanese-ryokan/)
verified
Double rooms in Japanese hotels can be smaller than you may be used to (e.g. 20 sqm). Every effort will be made to accommodate double room requests. However, during busy periods, there may be occasions when we are unable to offer a double room, so a twin room will be provided.
Itinerary
Hike ancient trails through Japan’s countryside
Stray off the tourist trail with an eight-day hiking adventure on some of the great ancient pilgrim routes in Japan. The Koya-san and Kumano Kodo treks take you deep through the wilderness and into the mountainous landscapes of Honshu, as you gain insight into the strong connection with past and present pilgrims. Along the way, stop by peaceful temples and monasteries, soak in traditional onsen and discover the cultural hubs of Kyoto and Osaka. This small-group adventure will give you both a physical and cultural workout around the best of enchanting Japan.

Koya-san and Kumano Kodo Trek exceeded my expectations. I thoroughly recommend. Tour had a great mix of cities, countryside, culture, food and fantastic trekking. Mix of accommodation and their staff and meals were excellent. Our guide Yao was exceptional, his love of his country and culture shone through and he went that extra mile to ensure we experience the best of what Japan had to offer. Loved it.

If you love hiking or if you’re a spiritual seeker this trip is for you! I am an avid meditator and loved getting to hike the same trails as so many others and visit so many sacred places, pause and offer prayers and blessings. This was a very special trip. The food is amazing. The hikes are totally doable. We went in October and I could have used more shorts. My only disappointment was the monastery stay. It’s more like an old one converted into a hotel for westerners to have an experience of a monastery stay. I wish that had been more clear to help manage my expectations. Walk to the stupa at night in Koyasan. It’s breathtaking and you might even catch the monks chanting outdoors like I did.

An excellent trip with just the right balance of activities and free time. The hiking sections were well structured so with the easier ones at the start to get you used to it and overall none were too difficult. Transfers and accommodation all very well organised and our group leader Yoga was great. Highly recommend.

We just wrapped up an amazing journey on the Kumano Kodo. Our guide - Kento - was an amazing resource of information, and the itinerary was perfect.

My daughter and I had an amazing time on our first ever intrepid trip. The hike is great, with beautiful forests, towns and cultural sites. Our guide Ryoga was organised, caring, and so much fun. It’s a challenging walk, but so rewarding for body and soul! Our group and guide were fantastic, loved the banter while walking and the karaoke on the last night!!

Intrepid is a great way to travel. With local guides you go places you may never discover on your own. It’s economical, sustainable and takes a lot of the hassle out of organising a trip in a foreign country. It’s also great for solo travellers.

Great opportunity to see rural Japan and hike part of the Kumano Kodo. Our guide, Ryoga, was fantastic. Some of the accomodation was sketchy, unnecessarily so unfortunately (I gave feedback to intrepid) and the temple stop feels like a tourist trap but overall a great trip with great people.

An enjoyable and challenging hiking tour and a very good itinerary. It was good spending considerable time in the countryside and smaller towns, as well as a bit of time in Osaka and Kyoto.

I highly recommend this trip. A lot was packed in over a short time, but away from the main tourist crowds. Fabulous food and a good balance of activities. Yao, our leader, was very knowledgeable and supportive. The stay in the monastery was a highlight, as was trekking through the forest. The trek was quite challenging but rewarding. A wonderful way to learn about, and see a different part of Japan.
