Trip Informations
Why you’ll love this trip
verified
Experience two of the main religions in Japan – Buddhism and Shintoism – by following the footsteps of ancient pilgrims on their quest for faith along the Koya-san and Kumano Kodo trails.
verified
Discover two of the major cultural hubs of Japan on foot, walking the Philosopher’s Path in Kyoto and strolling through the Dotombori district in Osaka.
verified
Join in the morning prayers and share a traditional shojin ryori (Buddhist vegetarian) meal during an overnight temple stay in Koya-san, deep in mountainous Wakayama prefecture.
verified
Soak in an onsen after a day of trekking in Yunomine – there's no better way in Japan to relax and rejuvenate than in the natural mineral waters of a hot spring.
verified
Explore Kyoto on a couple of nearby hikes for a different perspective on the life and culture in this notable city, as well as visiting some sites of natural and religious significance.
Is this trip right for you?
verified
The active nature of this trip means that the fitter you are, the more you will be able to enjoy it. It is expected that travellers joining this trip will have had some experience hiking before joining this tour. On some hikes you will need to be able to carry your overnight pack on the trail because we will forward your luggage to the next destination. Hiking distances vary from 3 to 15km per day with no more elevation change than 60 to 900 m on one hike.
verified
The hikes on the Koya-san trail and Kumano Kodo include sections rather than the whole trail, which gives you an experience of the trails without needing to commit to multiple days of strenuous trekking.
verified
When we aren't hiking on this trip, we primarily use public transport, which is efficient and convenient in Japan. Please pack light and compact as you will be expected to transport your luggage between train stations and to hotels, which can include going up and down multiple flights of stairs in crowded areas.
verified
In some destinations, you may be staying in a ryokan, which is a Japanese-style inn. It's a great taste of tradition; however, not everyone finds futon mattresses on the tatami floor, tiny bathrooms and proximity to other guests as comfortable as more Western-style hotels. Read more about ryokans here: https://www.tuuur.com/adventures/traditional-japanese-ryokan/ https://www.tuuur.com/adventures/traditional-japanese-ryokan/ (https://www.tuuur.com/adventures/traditional-japanese-ryokan/)
verified
Double rooms in Japanese hotels can be smaller than you may be used to (e.g. 20 sqm). Every effort will be made to accommodate double room requests. However, during busy periods, there may be occasions when we are unable to offer a double room, so a twin room will be provided.

The Kumano Kodo trail was excellent! I loved learning about Japanese culture and the trail’s history from Yoa, our amazing tour leader. The included meals were traditional and delicious. Taking public transport was an unexpected highlight. Highly recommend!

This was an enjoyable (and sometimes challenging) hike that travelled through less frequented paths (by international tourists, at least) and showed us aspects of rural Japan.

Great trip! The trekking a bit challenging with lots of steps. Leo our guide was very knowledgeable and helpful. Can't wait to book another trip to discover more of Japan's culture and wonderful places.

This trip exceeded my expectations in every way. I had never been to Japan, and had never even hiked before. I learned so much about both and loved every minute of it. Yao was an excellent guide, knowledgeable about both Japanese history and highly eco conscious. The hikes are very challenging, so be prepared and enjoy it.

I highly recommend this trip. The places we saw were interesting and beautiful, but what made it really special was out guide, Kento. He is so enthusiastic, entertaining, kind, and knowledgeable about so many different topics. Kento is an environmental champion, a multilingual world traveler, a Shugendo Buddhist monk, and a whole lot of fun!

A great way to see a different side of Japan! This trip will get you out of the city and take you up mountains, through forests, to the see and amazing onsens. Definitely quite a hike (I think the physical rating should be a 4/5 rather than a 3) but so worth is. Our guide, Hisa, was great, so friendly and knowledgeable.
