Trip Informations
Home of the sumo, geishas, sake, karaoke, onsen and izakaya – Japan is a feast for all your senses. This nine-day journey hits all the right spots, giving you a true appreciation for the land of the rising sun. Absorb the bustle of Tokyo before heading into the countryside for a homestay with fantastic home-cooked meals and take in the views of the iconic Mt Fuji. Travel on a futuristic bullet train to Kyoto and Hiroshima and step into this nation’s history before wrapping up your adventure in the foodie paradise of Osaka.
Why you’ll love this trip
Explore some of the best parts of Japan in just over a week! This is a cultural and culinary whirlwind from the streets of Tokyo to the eats of Osaka.
Discover the peaceful rural life with a countryside home stay in Shizuoka prefecture, sitting with the backdrop of Mt Fuji. Learn about the region’s local produce and sit down to a farm-to-table feast with your hosts.
Visit the red torii gate standing in the sea in Miyajima, learn about the history of Hiroshima and treat your taste buds to a signature Okonomiyaki pancake and a tasting through Hiroshima's 'sake town'.
Ride the rails like the locals, from lightning-fast bullet trains to scenic mountain rails offering seasonal views of cherry blossoms and autumn leaves.
See the many sides of Shibuya in Tokyo, from busy intersections to the tranquility of the ancient Meiji Shrine and the quirky fashion of Harajuku.
Is this trip right for you?
Japan is best explored on foot and by public transport. You’ll need to be fit enough to spend most of each day on your feet and able to handle your luggage as you navigate busy train stations. We recommend comfortable shoes and packing light.
Double rooms in Japanese hotels can be smaller than you may be used to (e.g. 20 sqm). Every effort will be made to accommodate double room requests. However, during busy periods, there may be occasions when we are unable to offer a double room, so a twin room will be provided.
The farm stay on Day 3 will be mostly in Kawane, with a visit to the local tea farm. As our host gets older, they cannot accommodate all our groups, so for some departures, you’ll experience a different homestay instead in Gotemba. In such cases, you'll not visit the tea farm, but your host will show you their wonderful vegetable gardens and you'll take part in helping them pick the veggies needed for a fantastic home-cooked dinner for the night.

As a solo traveller, Intrepid made my travels completely stress free and comfortable. Not having to navigate from city to city myself allowed me focus on the grandeur of Japan. Our group leader was an absolute gem. This was my first group tour and I was a little hesitant, but was immediately put at ease with the tour thanks to our amazing group leader, Yuki. Would 100% recommend.

Just completed “Japan Highlights” and let me say. This is the best Intrepid trip I have experienced. Yuki our fun Tour Leader is an absolute pleasure. This is the perfect itinerary for first time Japan.

This was a fantastic short trip. It was our first time to Japan and gave us a thorough overview. But really what made it perfect was our guide Yuki. If you get Yuki as your guide, you are very lucky. Expect to be on the move, with just a short time in each place, but enough to know if you want to come back. There was a good balance between time together with the group and independent time. Having a good guide takes all the headaches out of the organizational parts— booking train tickets, finding the right platform, getting to the station on time, booking hotels, etc.

Wonderful experience that anybody that has the chance should do. As the oldest group member I felt included and respected and had a thoroughly good time

Our experience with our tour guide in Japan was nothing short of exceptional. From the very beginning, her knowledge was incredible — no question was too big or too small, and she always took the time to give thoughtful, detailed answers. We asked her so many questions throughout the trip, and she never once made us feel rushed; she genuinely cared about making sure everyone understood and enjoyed each moment. What truly stood out was how attentive she was to every single person in the group. She had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel included, valued, and comfortable, no matter their pace or interests. Her organisation was seamless, everything ran smoothly, and yet it never felt rigid — she struck the perfect balance between structure and flexibility. Beyond her professionalism, she was simply a beautiful human being. Warm, kind, patient, and full of positive energy, she brought the group together and created an atmosphere that made the trip even more special. Her passion for Japan was infectious, and it added so much depth to everything we experienced. She is an absolute credit to your company, and it’s because of her that this trip will stay with us for a lifetime. We feel incredibly lucky to have had her as our guide.

An excellent way to get introduced to Japan. Spending a few nights in each city was a great way to experience them all. And the small group sizes and public transportation mean you really get an authentic experience

I had a brilliant time. The home stay was amazing. There isn’t much of a night life with this trip, FYI.

A great introduction to Japan. Hit all the big highlights. The home stay for a night was a lovely inclusion and the best sleep of the trip on the floor! Our guide Chad was exceptional. Food glorious food. Not sure what every bit was but it all tasted great. Intrepid do small groups well.

We explored Japan for our 20th Wedding anniversary celebration. 9 days travelling across the country. This was 25 years after our first travelling experience around the world. Our guide Susumu couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful. We loved every minute of our tour and will definitely be booking through Intrepid again.
