Trip Informations
Round up the kids and embark on an adventure through the 'Land of the Rising Sun' on this 12-day family trip through Japan. From the palaces of ancient emperors to whizzing bullet trains, this journey packs in the best stuff to see and do as a family, plus plenty of time to kick back and soak it up in the onsen. Learn the art of calligraphy in Tokyo, ride the Hakone Ropeway for views of Mt Fuji and immerse yourself in Japanese culture in Kyoto. With the local expertise of your leader to guide you at every step of the way, this is a family holiday that’s sure to create lifelong memories.
Why you’ll love this trip
Try your hand at traditional calligraphy in Shinjuku, then learn to cook your own okonomiyaki on a relaxing boat cruise around Tokyo Bay – Tokyo’s full of fun activities for the whole family!
Explore Hakone by cable-car, pirate ship and with a peaceful walk around the lake – maybe even catch a glimpse of the iconic Mt Fuji on a clear day – before relaxing in the soothing waters of an onsen.
Visit Himeji Castle – Japan's grandest samurai castle – then dive into Kyoto’s local culture with a walk around the famous Gion district.
Learn about a sobering yet important chapter of Japan’s history at the Hiroshima Peace Park, followed by a visit to the relaxing island of Miyajima where deer roam the streets.
Take a daytrip from Kyoto to Arashiyama and cruise along the Hozugawa River on a boat ride – this route along the river is over 400 years old and surrounded by lush rolling mountains – then, visit a bamboo forest.
Is this trip right for you?
Japan is best explored on foot and by public transport. You’ll need to be fit enough to spend most of each day on your feet and handle your luggage as you navigate busy train stations. We recommend comfortable shoes and packing light.
This trip includes staying at a ryokan (traditional inn) in Hakone, where you have the option to sleep on a futon on a tatami (mat floor) and take a traditional onsen bath. Western beds and bathrooms are also available.
Room sizes in Japan may be smaller than you’re used to, and larger families may be provided with two rooms due to limited availability of triple or quad share rooms.

Fantastic trip, saw places, had experiences that I couldn’t have planned, many fav moments. Trip pace was good for us with our son aged 12. Jane our tour guide was calm, flexible, organised and gave plenty of options for activities, food and having fun! Highly recommend for families - check weather, July was uncomfortably hot & humid for us and limited our ability to explore as much as we would have liked to in the heat.

Definitely recommend doing this tour. We had 3 other families and really enjoyed experiences and travelling with them. Is great for kids and adults alike. We had a wonderful tour guide Yuka who patiently steered us thru bus, train, location, sights and foods. Very helpful and took the stress out! I feel like we saw all of Japan that we hoped to see.

this was one of the best intrepid trips I have gone on. The guide was excellent the itinerary comprehensive and everything just worked well. One comment I would say is it can be a bit of a challenge getting food as a vegetarian. There is no concept for of this - many think it’s the same as vegan and protein options were reduced. take protein snacks with you or buy them

This is the second time I have used Intrepid, and both times they have excelled themselves. This is a wonderful family holiday experience. I will definitely be using intrepid a third time.

Our tour guide, Jane, was excellent. She had a great knowledge of both the local and wider area. She took us to both small restaurants and larger too. She was very knowledgeable. We never had a bad meal, they were all great. As was the accommodation! I would highly recommended intrepid go anyone.

We liked that the intrepid trip is environmentally friendly, utilising public transportation. This made us really feel like locals. We thought the European trip guide worked really well for the European guests. The guide understands European guests’ needs and can also recommend the best way for Western guests to approach Japanese culture.

Wow what an excellent holiday. Such a beautiful country with wonderful people. This has been a trip I will remember for the rest of my life and would recommend it to anyone. A special mention to our guide Guillaume Bigo who was brilliant, knowledgeable and caring.
