Trip Informations
Why you’ll love this trip
Get up close and personal with the active volcanoes scattered across the Aeolian Islands and maybe take a dip in one of the Sulphur springs.
Take a half daytrip to Taormina – a charming hilltop Sicilian town – and head out on a boat trip to explore the bays and coves, learn about the town and enjoy an aperitif in the sunshine.
Explore the cliffside fortifications of Tropea and unwind at the beach under the Aeolian sun. Then, hop on a boat for a tour of the Aeolian Islands and cool off with a swim in the sea.
Taste a Neapolitan pizza in Naples – where it allegedly all began – then indulge your senses with local favourites from Civita, Tropea and Stromboli.
Take an orientation walk in Catania with your handy local leader and enjoy a granita tasting – there's nothing like a semi-frozen dessert to cool you down!
Is this trip right for you?
Transportation on the trip includes local trains, private vehicles and public buses. The trains are comfortable (and have toilets), but they can be busy, especially in peak summer. You’ll need to carry your own luggage so ensure it meets our weight and size recommendations in the ‘Packing’ section of the Essential Trip Information.
Summer temperatures can exceed 40°c, so use sun protection, wear layers and stay hydrated. Many European hotels lack air-conditioning and local trains’ cooling systems can fail. Beaches are crowded during peak season so consider the time of year you travel.
European hotel rooms may seem small by American or Australian standards, and they often have two single beds instead of doubles.
If you’re interested in a longer trip, consider starting in Rome with our ’Rome to Sicily’ trip (code ZMSFC).

Truly a life changing trip. Loved all the smaller cities and towns that most don’t see in a trip to Italy.

This is a trip of a lifetime. If you’re looking for something unique, something off the beaten path, something that you’ll remember forever and ever - book this trip. I cannot rave enough about the Highlights of Calabria. Our tour leader, Vincenzo, made the this trip even more special. The food, wine, and activities he planned/recommended made us feel like we were experiencing the heart of each city.

I’ve been to Italy 12 times but have never been to Calabria or Sicily or Sardinia. It’s been a wonderful journey. Thoroughly enjoyed this tour because of our tour, Director, Vincenzo, Raffaele La Badessa… A great person with a great personality!!!

Both our trip to Calabria and Laura our trip leader far exceeded our expectations. Our 8 day journey from the Amalfi Coast to Sicily was rich in scenery, culture and educational opportunity. We look forward to our next Intrepid exploration. Bill

This trip gives diverse insight into southern parts of Italy. Civita and Tropea are beautiful locations included on this itinerary that I would not have otherwise visited. I’m also glad this gave a taste of Sicily, as Taormina and Catania were very different and worthwhile.

A great trip to escape the more popular, touristy parts of Italy and slow down for a bit. Such a brilliant tour guide, excellent food and some amazing beaches!
