Trip Informations
Discover the Turkish Black Sea region and the Caucasus on this 22-day adventure from Istanbul to Yerevan. See vestiges of the Ottoman Empire in Safranbolu and step into the lofty cliffside Sumela Monastery. Sip tea in Turkey's largest tea region, hike the Ayder Plateau and meet locals in highland villages. Venture into the Caucasus, starting in Tbilisi. Learn about the age-old wine traditions of Georgia and Armenia, go hiking in Dilijan National Park and kick back at Lake Sevan. Following the Black Sea coast to the soaring peaks of the Caucasus Mountains, you'll be greeted by cultures rich with traditions, stunning landscapes and mouth-watering local eats.
Why you’ll love this trip
Support local communities – visit the first cafe in Armenia to provide employment opportunities to people living with disabilities, stay by Lake Sevan at a local NGO committed to inclusivity and attend a cooking workshop where the local women work to preserve Armenian culture.
Step inside the spectacular Sumela Monastery, built on the side of a cliff in the 4th century. See remarkably well-preserved frescoes and explore the chapels, courtyards, library and monastic living quarters.
Veer off the tourist track to see the lesser-known side of this region. Discover Turkey's distinctive Black Sea region, then visit the Soviet ghost town of Tskhaltubo in Georgia and charming Gyumri in Armenia.
Connect with the locals – enjoy a cuppa at a Turkish tea plantation, have a home-cooked lunch with a family of cheesemakers and visit a family-owned winery in Georgia.
Hike on Ayder Plateau and in Dilijan National Park, relax on the coast of the Black Sea and take a refreshing dip in Lake Sevan – this trip is full of opportunities to get close to nature.
Is this trip right for you?
This trip doesn't spend a lot of time in Istanbul. We highly recommend extending your stay to enjoy all this city has to offer.
This trip includes a few long travel days. This is necessary for covering large distances in a short period of time, and the journey is well worth it – there’s plenty of beautiful scenery to admire and there’ll be plenty of stops along the way to stretch your legs.
Some destinations on this trip are very hilly and mountainous, which means lots of steps are an inherent feature of the landscape. You will have to be able to easily lift your luggage and carry it up and down stairs and inclines. We highly recommend packing light.
You’ll spend a night at a lake lodge where the facilities will be simple and shared. The opportunity to support a local NGO and the great location close to Lake Sevan will more than make up for the lack of modern amenities.
