Trip Informations
Island-hop through the North Atlantic on this 10-day trip aboard the Ocean Victory. Starting in the town of Troon, sail to the Christian pilgrimage site of Iona, then see skuas, fulmars, razorbills and kittiwakes nesting on the island of Lunga. Hear the dulcet tones of Gaelic in Stornoway, see fjords and huge public art installations in Djupivogur and witness the UK's largest colony of Atlantic puffins in UNESCO World Heritage-listed St Kilda. Take advantage of your Expedition Team’s local expertise as you learn about the history of the Westman Islands and the thriving culture of Torshavn on the Faroe Islands.
Why you’ll love this trip
Learn about the origins of Scottish Christianity on the island of Iona – a Christian pilgrimage site for almost 1500 years. Visit the Iona Abbey Museum and admire the architecture of the local 13th-century church.
Visit Britain’s only dual UNESCO World Heritage Site, St Kilda – recognised for both its human and natural wonders. Encounter this island’s 4000-year history, plus see the native St Kilda wren and the UK’s largest colony of Atlantic puffins.
Encounter Norse culture and history on the Faroe Islands. Explore the less-visited town of Vagur, fringed with basalt cliffs, and the capital of Torshavn, where you’ll see turf-roofed buildings and a vast collection of Faroese art at the National Museum.
Hear locals speaking Gaelic in Stornoway, one of the few towns in Scotland where this language is spoken on a daily basis. Here, you’ll also see the Neolithic Calanais Stones (which predate Stonehenge!).
Uncover the story of the infamous 1973 volcanic eruption on Heimaey, the largest of the Westman Islands.
Is this trip right for you?
The Ocean Victory is an ice-strengthened ship – large, sturdy and suited to unpredictable waters. Some people may experience seasickness in occasional rough seas. We have a doctor on board should you need assistance. Over-the-counter seasickness medication is usually an easy fix.
Temperatures in the North Atlantic Isles can get very cold, but it also can get surprisingly warm when the sun comes out. We recommend dressing in layers when you journey outside. We’ll loan you a waterproof jacket and waterproof boots that are sturdy and warm. Please see the Essential Trip Information for a packing list.
Depending on the weather, you’ll be travelling around in a Zodiac boat quite regularly to explore the area and search for wildlife. It can get cold and wet on the Zodiac, so make sure you dress appropriately and keep your camera safe and dry. A fair level of mobility is needed for wet and dry landings from the boat, as well as on steep terrain, snow and other uneven surfaces. Elevators may be closed in rough seas, requiring the use of stairs for meals, presentations and activities.
The weather plays a pivotal part in this adventure and, although there’s an itinerary in place, there are no guarantees that you’ll be able to do everything that is planned. A level of flexibility and openness to embracing the unexpected are important in expedition travel. We may also be confined to the ship during rough weather, but there are plenty of onboard resources and activities. The ship’s library and educational lectures are ideal ways to stay entertained, while the spa and gym will keep you fresh for when the weather clears.
