Trip Informations
Set off on a 10-day journey to the glacial landscapes of Iceland and east Greenland. Travel with an expert Expedition Team who will help you spot marine life as you cross the Denmark Strait and guide you on a Zodiac excursion to one of the best locations in Greenland to spot whales. Witness the mighty Eldfell Volcano on Heimaey Island and the Snaefellsnes Peninsula’s Kirkjufell Mountain, of Game of Thrones fame. Visits to fishing villages and culturally rich towns like Tasiilaq, home to the Tunumiit people, will give you an insight into what it's like to be a local in this region marked by dramatic, icy landscapes.
Why you’ll love this trip
Hike along the lava fields of Eldfell Volcano on Heimaey Island – the site of one of Iceland’s most infamous eruptions.
Explore the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, home to the colourful fishing village of Grundarfjordur and the iconic Kirkjufell Mountain, known for its distinctive steeple-like shape.
Encounter the abundance of birdlife on Vigur Island, where you can see some of Iceland’s largest colonies of puffins, eider ducks and Arctic terns.
Experience east Greenlandic culture and hospitality in the villages of Kuummiit and Tasiilaq. Meet the locals, watch traditional drum dancing, learn about the art form of tupilak and browse handicrafts at the Stunk Artisan Workshop.
Discover wartime heritage when you visit the ruins of a US airbase from WWII in the village of Ikateq, located near the remarkable Sermilik Fjord.
Is this trip right for you?
The Ocean Victory is an ice-strengthened ship – large, sturdy and suited to the unpredictable Arctic waters. Some people may experience seasickness in occasional rough seas. We have a doctor on board should you need assistance. Over-the-counter seasickness medication is usually an easy fix.
Temperatures in the Arctic can get very cold, but it also can get surprisingly warm when the sun comes out. We recommend dressing in layers when you journey outside. We’ll loan you waterproof boots that are sturdy and warm, plus we’ll provide you with a waterproof jacket that is yours to keep. Please see the Essential Trip Information for a packing list.
Depending on the weather, you’ll be travelling in a Zodiac boat quite regularly to explore the areas and search for wildlife. It can get cold and wet on the Zodiac, so make sure you dress appropriately and keep your camera safe and dry. A fair level of mobility is needed for wet and dry landings from the boat, as well as on steep terrain, snow and other uneven surfaces. Elevators may be closed in rough seas, requiring the use of stairs for meals, presentations and activities.
The weather plays a pivotal part in this adventure and, although there’s an itinerary in place, there are no guarantees that you’ll be able to do everything that is planned. A level of flexibility and openness to embracing the unexpected are important in expedition travel, especially in an area as remote as the Arctic. The experienced Expedition Team and captain will always have alternative landing sites planned if the first option is no longer available due to weather.
We may be confined to the ship during rough weather, but there are plenty of onboard resources and activities. The ship’s library and educational lectures are ideal ways to stay entertained, while the spa and gym will keep you fresh for when the weather clears.
