Trip Informations
Get your heart racing on an active trip across four countries, showcasing some of the best of the Western Balkans. Hike through the Dinaric Alps from Croatia through Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Albania. Watch the sunset on an evening hike in Blidinje Nature Park and spend a day exploring Sarajevo at your own pace. Take a scenic ferry trip to Koman, follow the Valbona-Theth trail and see glacial lakes as you wander through Durmitor National Park in Montenegro. With history, culture, nature and adventure combined, this is a journey you won’t want to miss.
Why you’ll love this trip
Hike one of the world’s most beautiful mountain ranges and discover the history, culture and landscapes of not one, not two, but four southern European countries – Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Albania.
Embark on a scenic trail to the highest and most remote village in Bosnia – Lukomir. Here, you’ll meet the locals, learn about their way of life and share lunch, laughs, local cheese and, of course, Bosnian coffee.
Stay overnight in the fairytale-like Theth – one of the wonders in the Albanian Alps, declared a Protected Historic Center by the Albanian Government. Maybe swim in the Blue Eye of Theth or Grunasi Waterfall and cool off in your scenic surrounds.
Explore UNESCO World Heritage-listed Durmitor National Park and take in the panoramic views across glacial lakes and pine forests as you hike.
Take a ferry across Komani Lake. Cruise across the turquoise waters, framed by towering mountains and look for wild birds like kingfishers and grey herons.
Is this trip right for you?
This is a hiking trip, so a good level of fitness is essential. Expect long days (up to 9 hours) and hikes of up to 20 km a day, with over 1000 m of elevation gain. Be prepared for remote mountain regions and unpredictable weather.
You’ll be covering four countries, so there will be quite a bit of driving. Make sure you’re comfortable with up to 4 hours in the seat each day.
Some hikes are point-to-point with no shortcuts or possible turn-backs. Review the descriptions carefully to ensure you’re comfortable with the time, distance and terrain.
Pack lightly as you’ll need to carry your own bag. Although you won’t walk long distances with your luggage (max 30 minutes), aim to keep it under 15 kg. Bringing a soft duffel bag or backpack is essential, as on certain hikes we will use mules to transport it to our next overnight stop. You’ll also need a daypack/small bag for water and personal items during daytrips.

Hats of to my guide Tamara. Super enthusiastic, knowledgeable and fun. The itinerary was well organised, ample time for rest between the hikes done. Accomodation also exceeded expectations; clean, nice and with full access to all facilities and amenities. Overall stellar experience!

This trip was great! The hikes were challenging with a lot of altitude and steep sections, but the views from the top of the mountains were always worth it! Ivana was a fantastic guide and I can only recommend this trip to hiking-enthusiasts.

Hiking the Balkans was an excellent trip. Our tour guide Ivan was fantastic and very knowlegeable about the countries and area we visited. Hikes were amazing and definitely got the heart pumping. You definitley need to have fitness to enjoy these hikes. Was a small group however we all got along really well. Would definitely recommend.

Hiking the Balkans is an excellent tour. The landscapes we traveled through were beautiful and all accommodation was very good and safe. The hikes themselves are tough and challenging, but extremely rewarding.

This trip includes some incredible hikes, challenging enough for experienced hikers. But the best surprise was the cultural experience staying in more rural areas. Also its a well paced itinerary, with hikes and days off.

This was the first trip I've done on my own. I was very nervous leading up to it, but as soon as I met our guide Ivana, all nerves disappeared. It was a brilliant experience, and I'm so pleased I did it. Hiking in the Balkans was incredible, and really was a holiday to remember! I highly recommend!

Hiking the Balkans was a fantastic tour. The 5 hikes were beautiful and provided just the right amount of a challenge. Out leader was fantastic, the accommodation and the food top notch and our driver was really great. It was lovely to also visit Sarajevo and stay in some lovely villages. There was a lot of driving but this is to be expected. Maybe extending the tour into Kosovo would be great to avoid the tough journey from Valbona to Tirana and adding an extra hike. All in all a great experience and one I would recommend.

Perfect combination of a hiking and cultural tour, more tours should be like this! Hikes are challenging but reasonable and each one is different. The environment is beautiful and choosing your favorite hike will be difficult :) On rest days mingle in small villages and learn about the war-centric history in the city of Sarajevo. Recommend arriving early to Split to safely explore the city on your own time prior to the tour starting. BYO trekking poles and having a water bladder for hikes is easier than carrying bottles, you will sweat a lot. Some steep climbs but not much scrambling required. Plenty of opportunities to grab trail snacks and the post-hike meals are delicious. Having a rest day between hikes is forgiving on the knees. 5/5 stars!
