Trip Informations
The kingdom of Bhutan in the Himalayas sits between two spiritual hubs – Tibet and India – and is one of Asia’s best-kept secrets. On this active adventure, you’ll discover there is no better way to explore it than on foot as you hike through country that’s full of protected forest, so it absorbs more carbon than it uses. Feel closer to enlightenment as you hike along the restored Trans Bhutan Trail which will immerse you in the past, present and future. Uncover Bhutan’s rich cultural heritage on a journey that explores forested valleys, fortified monasteries and sacred mountains on your own two feet and discover the beauty of its people, landscape and culture with a local leader who will help you unlock its secrets.
Why you’ll love this trip
Take in panoramic views of the Himalayas from the Dochula Pass, which sits more than 3000 m above sea level and is home to many fluttering prayer flags.
Hike along the Divine Madman Trail, believed to be a trail followed by Drukpa Kuenley – a famous Buddhist monk, missionary and poet who came to Bhutan from Tibet.
Explore the country’s biggest Dzong (a complex of fortified buildings which served as a Buddhist school) in Trongsa at the end of your hike from Chendebji.
Wander around the remote, lush and beautiful Tang Valley and Mebar Tsho (Burning Lake), famous for being one of the most serene places in Bhutan to meditate.
Journey to Taktsang, commonly known as the Tiger's Nest – a small monastery clinging to a rocky cliff 900 m above the valley floor – and soak in its magnificence.
Is this trip right for you?
This is trip spends time at altitude; you should refer to the Medical & Health Information for this trip to understand the risks.
Please read packing list available on Essential Trip document carefully and make sure you bring all necessary items.
Despite Bhutan being a small country, you'll experience long travel days as most roads are single lane. It’s all part of the adventure and a great way to get to know your fellow travellers. Please read the itinerary carefully for travel time estimates.
While it’s legal to consume imported meat, the slaughtering of animals for consumption within Bhutan is banned, therefore delicious veggie dishes are varied and bountiful at every meal.
Please be aware that hot water is limited in some places. Speaking of all things heated, the Bhutanese love chilli and the food can be a touch spicy.
All meals are included due to the nature of travelling in Bhutan. This means there may be limited choices on some days.

We walked sections of the TBT with wonderful guides, Robin & Jevaan. Their knowledge of & enthusiasm for sharing information about Bhutan, Buddhism & any general questions with a very curious group was exemplary. Both are great ambassadors for Bhutan & Intrepid. Special mention goes to our driver, Mr Tsering whose great skill & infinite patience ensured safe travels, welcome cups of tea & a constant smile everyday. Bhutan is a beautiful, safe & unique country to visit. We are privileged to be able to take a little of their philosophy of life home with us.

Robin, Jevan and Tshering made this 11 day full on trip - both enjoyable and educational. Hikes well structured, accommodation beyond our expectations, and varied and plentiful foods. Generally we do things ourselves - but had to go with agency for Bhutan. Very happy with our Intrepid Bhutan experience- and would recommend to our friends.

The trip is a real gem!!! The perfect amount of hiking to allow to acclimatise. So well organised. The leader Bijay was exceptional with his knowledge, sense of humour and accommodating group needs. Kezang was our most proficient driver and the soul of the whole bus. Bikash was looking after everyone in the group hikes, so we all got through the hike no matter the pace. Thank you!

Bhutan is a unique country to visit and the itinerary of this trip was perfectly curated. In addition to the selection of hikes along the Trans Bhutan Trail, we experienced a depth of cultural activities that was exceptional. Our guide was amazing in every way, and his intimate knowledge at the local level facilitated meaningful experiences of community, nature and spirituality. It was a real privilege to be part of this trip.
