Trip Informations
Why you’ll love this trip
Follow the most scenic section of the coastal Fisherman’s Trail, taking in panoramic views of Portugal’s cliffs, beaches and ocean as you walk. At the end of each day’s hike, maybe unwind on the sandy shore or take a quick dip.
Delight in Portugal’s bountiful coastline and indulge in a fresh seafood lunch in the village of Almograve with ingredients from the local fish market.
Walk to Capela de Nossa Senhora do Mar – a small chapel overlooking the ocean – and watch the sunset over the region, maybe with a homemade picnic.
Look for burrows and footprints of Egyptian mongooses, beech martens and otters in the sand dunes as you walk along the ancient trail in the southwest of Portugal.
Hike to Cabo de Sao Vicente – mainland Europe’s southwestern most point. Hear stories about the area’s maritime and local history from your local leader.
Is this trip right for you?
This trip involves plenty of walking over varied and sometimes steep terrain and is best suited to travellers with a good level of mobility. Good footwear and clothing for all types of weather is recommended. Details on physical activities can be found in the itinerary.
You will be passing through remote and undeveloped parts of Portugal on your journey so you must bring a day pack to carry enough water and snacks for each day.
On this trip you must pack as lightly as possible because you’ll be expected to carry your own bag. Although you won't be required to walk long distances with your luggage (max 30 minutes), we strongly recommend keeping the weight under 15 kg (33 lb). You'll also need a daypack/bag to carry water and a camera for daytrips.
Itinerary
A scenic journey along Portugal’s southwest coast
Lace up your boots and set off along Portugal’s Rota Vicentina – arguably one of Europe’s most scenic hiking trails. A world away from the bustle of Lisbon, you’ll hike along ancient coastal paths, passing through the sunny Alentejo and Algarve regions. Look for burrows and footprints of Egyptian mongooses, beech martens and otters in the sand dunes along the ancient Fisherman's Trail. Learn about the region’s distinct biodiversity from your local leader, relax on the beautiful beaches and feast on fresh seafood in Almograve – the beauty of this corner of Portugal will stay stamped on your passport and your memory.

The Hike the Rota Vicentina is a fabulous way to explore this stunning coastline of Portugal. And if you are lucky enough to have Matteo Ottocento as your leader then you are in safe hands and will have a wonderful experience.

Amazing trip! Matteo was the best guide! Please pay attention to the difficulty rating and be prepared for hiking in sand, sun, and heat!

Relaxed walking holiday along the spectacular Portuguese Atlantic coast - I enjoyed the sand dunes on top of the cliffs (soft underfoot and easier walking than you’d think). Beautiful flowers in early June. Loved the beaches and swam the waves. Fun to spot precariously nesting storks!

I had an amazing trip! You get one stunning view after another while walking from bay to bay. However, there are some very sandy sections and you will get sand in your shoes, just be aware of this. I was lucky to have a great group and Oswaldo as our tour guide. Both made the trip an unforgettable experience!

This was a fantastic trip. Just the right level of physical exertion but not too much to not be able to enjoy the scenery.

A FANTASTIC experience! Our small group and local guide made for such a positive experience. I had never traveled with a group of strangers before, and I wasn't sure if I'd like it, but it ended up being wonderful! I would happily travel with Intrepid again.

Exceptionally scenic coastal route! Doesn’t get any better than this. Majority of hike is high on cliff edges, on sandy paths. Recommend purchasing hiking gaiters to keep majority of sand out of shoes along with light shoe-height cross-trainers for this type of terrain. Poles weren’t necessary but helpful a day or two for steeper sections. Our guide, Oswaldo, was very experienced on this route and easily handled or explained the balance of logistics. 75% of our group were over 55 and handled all terrain really well. Fitness level is important. Go for it if solo and curious! Our guide really was a successful part of the whole experience!

The Fisherman's Trail was one of the most beautiful walks I've ever taken. The trail goes along cliffs with views of the beaches and ocean below, though forests, and sometimes descends to the beaches themselves. Most of the trail is away from any towns and villages, with wide open views - but there is just enough "civilization", stratigically placed, to stop for a snack, lunch, or of course dinner and a hot shower and comfortable bed. Our guide was excellent, explaining about the trail itself, the ways in which the various fish were caught or harvested, and the industries and lives of the people in the villages and towns we passed through.

This hike is a fun and not too challenging hike. Some long days but so worth the beauty and surroundings. Loved our guide Matteo
